Has any, or is anyone, not wearing a bridal dress as the bride?

amee, 29 July, 2009 at 12:17 Posted on Planning 0 12

I know this probably sounds like a strange question but am not sure whether I will opt for a bridal dress that I will never wear again and will prob not be able to sell on or go with a dress that I could possibly wear again to another special occasion.

Was wondering if anyone else had or is feeling the same way and if so what did you choose?

Amee

    Hi Amee

I don't think she'll mind me posting this seen as though I've chopped their heads off but this was my SIL's wedding dress. She didn't want traditional either.

There were her bridesmaids dresses too.

    It worked really well.

    Hi Claire,

Thanks for the pics. Those dresses are lovely!

I had originally chosen a 'traditional' beautiful wedding dress that was totally perfect, except, when I really thought about it I couldn't justify the money it was going to cost, esp when I would only wear it once.

I am getting married on NYE so think that with that time of year I could get away with an evening dress of sorts in maybe a soft gold or silver colour.

As I won't be able to purchase/order anything until the end of September the timescales are also ruling out getting a bridal dress and my not being a size 12 pretty much rules out the samples.

I usually love the clothes in Coast and Monsoon but the current selection is not inspiring me!

I never wanted to do the traditional wedding dress thing, it's just so not me. My OH didn't want to either (plus thought two girls in big white dresses would look odd - although two of our friends are doing exactly that in 3 days time!)

    This is what we wore:

Mrs Lord - thanks for the reply, unfortunately I can't access this just now as work's filter has deemed it unworthy! Its so tempramental....... I hope it doesn't take a dislike to hitched!!

CBear - you both look lovely and v. happy! I love the pewter/silver colour and think I may go for that. OH is wearing a grey-ish suit (I think - not bought it yet) and think that it would look quite nice us both being in a similar tone.

LennonLuver - wowee... v impressive. Have you been dress shopping yet or will you need to have it specially made for you?

    Hi Amee

No I haven't been dress shopping yet but although I don't think I will like a "normal" bridal dress I really should try some on, I may surprise myself! The first dress would cost £2500 to be made by the company but I was thinking of maybe taking some ideas to a local dress maker and getting advice on timescales and prices etc cos I feel £2500 is way too expensive.

Good luck finding your dream dress x

Hello! I thought I didn't want a white dress. I also knew I didn't want a BIG dress:-) My OH is Asian so white isn't traditional anyway and I love bright colours. I went shopping with a friend to try on dresses to see what shapes/styles suit me and in Debenhams I tried on lots of colourful dresses and a white dress. Said dress then kept me awake most of the night and I ordered it in the morning (it's only £110 hooray)!! I would recomend trying on all sorts of things even if you think it won't suit you or it's not the right colour - you may find something wonderful and it's really good fun. Recomend Debenhams (because of all the concessions - think there was a rack somewhere with discounted bridal dresses too) and Monsoon because there's so much choice. Good luck! x

I didn't wear a wedding dress - I went for a BM dress - more for practicalities of getting wed on a beach. I adore my dress - its a 2 piece so the top can be worn with jeans or dressed up, the skirt I'll probably get shortened at some point for summer events... And it was £199! Truebride do lots of nice 'non bridey' dresses ....

Lennonluver - I have the top half of the dress you have pictured on the right in Carnegie Tartan and also a blk and white tartan and they alone cost £280 each. I took it to a dressmaker who was making me a posh ball skirt to go with it (in blk) and she was really impressed with the quality/finish etc and could see why it cos so much - they are made in Italy to order so.... There is also a lot of material just in the corset top ... If you did go for something like have it as a two piece as the corset top is really cool with jeans, or again dressed up with a black skirt....

Mrs SP I really do love the dress on the right, fell in love with it as soon as I saw it i mag but then the price tag depressed me slightly lol it's from tartan spirit couture.

I hadn't thought about it being in two parts, that is a good tip as that way I could wear it again and when peeps said to me "I love your top where did you get it?" I could reply "it's part of my wedding dress actually" lol!

    Or not!!

My Carnegie corset was more than these guys advertise on their site because it was a non-standard tartan (ie not one that you find in every scottish tartan shop on the royal mile!!) So I guess depending what tartan you're going for it might be more than the price they quote here.... although i think they use silk tartan rather than wool tartan for the wedding dresses.

There is a Heritage of Scotland in Kirkcaldy and they sometimes have this dress on display - might be worth a trip if you're close to Kirkcaldy??!

It is your wedding day and you'll be the one to decide regarding with this matter, there's nothing wrong if you dont want to wear a bridal gown, you ca choose a formal dress just don't forget to match it with waht your groom will wear. women chose to wear such bridal gown for as what they always say getting married must be one of the most unforgettable moment in your lfe. Theres nothing wrong in being prctical this time besides I had witness a lot of wedding where in brides don't wear bridaal gown well it was cute. good luck o your wedding
