Has anyone actually had swine flu?

Sairedy, 7 July, 2009 at 14:03 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

We've just heard that there has been a confirmed case in our local school and while my kids don't go there it is obviously getting closer and we do and have socialised with friends of friends iykwim

Now I'm not really worried as we're not in any high risk groups for being ill as such but just wondered if anyone had had it how do you know it's not just a bad cold? M (2.5) has a cough & cold at the mo but is still managing to function day to day so just wondered what to look out for?

My doctors think I have it- I'm in Birmingham so no swabbing for it though. I'm in a high risk group (heart problems), so am on Tamiflu and some other medications to control symptoms. I started on Sunday with sore throat, and aching joints. Woke up yesterday and the whole room was spinning, I hadn't even moved and couldn't get up because of it (had to get family around to ring a doctor)- it was very scary because I didn't know what it was and was worried it could be something to do with my heart. I'm uncomfortable at the moment, but tamiflu, anti dizziness tablets and paracetamol are taking the 'edge' off the symptoms. I've still got sore throat/temp/sneezes and aches now.

My friend has it and I was at The Wireless Festival with her all day on Saturday - eeek!

The doc confirmed it, but they haven't swabbed her or given her anything. I feel fine though. For now........!

Just wanted to add, that I work opposite a girl who is pregnant, she has demanded to be moved, but the boss has told her she is being ridiculous.

She keeps giving me shocking looks and I feel terrbly guilty.......

Just had a pupil in my school confirmed with it, and funnily enough I did have a lot of the symptoms last week, but only for a day so I don't think it was it.

Some people seem to get really ill with it, but one medical bloke said you can get it without realising it, which sounds a bit strange.

A couple of children at my nephew's school have had it but I think someone said it's the H1N1 strain (is that it?) that isn't so bad and only lasted about 48 hours, they apparently had sickness with it though.

First case confirmed here at work, although they won't name the individual.

    No symptoms yet.

H1N1 is swine flu - it's a mild strain in itself, but as with all flu, can be risky for some.

We've got two confirmed cases in our office now, and a possible third, so I'm working from home (am 30 weeks pg and therefore in one of the high-risk groups for complications).

Two children at my son's school have it. I have got a cold & sore throat but I dont think I've got flu, I am up and about even if I feel a bit rough. And my youngest was snuffly at the weekend but not ill in himself so I am assuming that I have got what he had. Having said that I was supposed to be going to the dentist today and didnt want to go sneezing everywhere in case I did have it so rang the docs to check that I dont have enough symptoms for it to be flu and am still waiting for my gp to ring back and give me the all clear. I'd rather do that than go out and spread it about for obvious reasons.

Edited to add, was called by GP who said it doesnt sound like I have it (which is what I thought) but then she said that as they arent sending swabs off anymore and some people will get it really mildly there is no way of knowing if I have it or not! I am presuming not, I am sure I would feel iller than this, I am up and about.

Does your boss know that swine flu is potentially much more dangerous for a pregnant woman and the foetus? I'd be kicking up a massive fuss if I was her.

ETA just realised you don't actually have any symptoms. In that case she is being a bit ridiculous- she's more likely to catch it in the supermarket.

Not yet but 1 local school has a fair few cases and theres now been 1 confirmed case at daughter 1's school. we also suspect my bil, his daughter and ex have had it, all were poorly a few weeks ago (couldnt get out of bed ill) and doc now thinks could have been that. think its pretty inevitable somebody in our family will get it but its not a killer so im not worried.

Someone I work with is off work today ill, not sure if it is swine flu though, will see how long they are off

If it is anywhere as bad as normal seasonal flu, I am pretty certain you would be able to tell it apart from a bad cold

Imagine Christmas day, dragging yourself out of bed for 20 minutes to try and eat some christmas dinner, eating a few mouthfuls and then dragging your sorry arse back to bed because you just can't eat or be bothered with anything
