Has anyone been Paragliding?

Sparkley, 26 May, 2009 at 13:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Hello lovely Hitchers,

It's the boyfs birthday next week and he would like to go Paragliding. We have booked the day off work to go somewhere, ideally on the South Coast, can anyone recommend anywhere to go?

Oh, and is it dangerous?? ?

I did it in Turkey a few years back and it was fantastic. Bloody frightening, but fantastic. I don't know where you can do it in the UK, though I suspect the South Downs would be a good bet. Is it dangerous? No more than parachuting I would have thought.

If it's when you go up with a parachute but you're attached to a boat then yes H and I did it in Cyprus and it was fab. I don't think it's dangerous, as long as the rope is strong lol!

I went up the mountain to do it a few years ago, but got scared <wimp> so I had to endure the horrific journey back down in this teeny tiny bus thing ?

I have done it on the back of the boat in Tenerife which was fab. I will take a look at the South Downs ?

It's when you jump off the edge of a mountain with a parachute attached to your back...

Paragliding is brilliant - really really brilliant. I did a tandem flight in Turkey (have we all been to Olu Deniz then?!) and then H and I did a course about 10 years ago in Wales, where we learnt how to fly solo.

The only problem was the wind - a lot of days were either too windy, or not windy enough, so it was a PITA going and staying down in Wales and then not getting to fly, we used up a lot of holiday time and money going round tourist places etc due to wasted days.

When the children are older I would LOVE to take it up as a hobby. Its such a great feeling, and its actually quite a gentle sport rather than an extreme one, you're only floating on the wind (unless you want to show off and do tricks that is!).
