Has anyone got a lodger or is a lodger?

emmali, 20 November, 2008 at 11:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

My brother has recently split up from his partner and needs to rent a room out. Does anyone here have a lodger or is a lodger and, if so, where did you advertise/find your room and how effective was it?

TIA

Em

We've had a couple of short term lodgers in the past. We didn't advertise. In both cases we knew of someone who needed a room for a while. Worth keeping your ear to the ground for people you know, as there are benefits to that.

E.g. the first guy was someone H had worked with previously. He has a slightly grating (but overall nice) personality but we knew we could put up with it because it was a fixed period and he worked long hours so we wouldn't see him much (and he's clean and tidy!).

The second one was a friend of a friend who H knew quite well. He wasn't so clean and tidy but extremely laid back so there were no real issues about anything, plus he burns the candle at both ends so we didn't see a lot of him either.

I found it was good to know what we were letting ourselves in for.

We have a lodger. We advertised on www.spareroom.co.uk and www.easyflatmate.co.uk.

We had lots of interest from both sites. We were quite picky, we wanted a female and someone a bit 'older', and we found the perfect lodger. She is great, although we hardly see her, she is clean, sociable and doubles as a cat sitter when we are away ?

It's worked really well for us.

We often have adverts/emails around my office offering rooms available. Does he/you or anyone in the family work in a large-ish office?

I've been flatsharing for the last couple of years, and found all my places on www.easyroommate.com . (I'm a room mate and I'm easy ? )

Hi, we have one. I went in to post on a notice board at a local company that has a lot of employees from other countries seconded there, and the security guard claimed the room before I got to the notice board. And he's great.

You can also try gumtree (com or co.uk).
