Has anyone had thier teeth whitened?

Penny P, 3 October, 2013 at 09:16 Posted on Planning 0 4

My H2B drinks a lot of coffee and it has made his teeth disgustingly stained. I have tried to 'ban' him from drinking coffee until after our wedding day but he won't have any of it!

So the other option is teeth whitening. I know you can get home kits or have it done professionally by a dentist.

Your recommendations and experiences please!

Both myself and my partner had our teeth whitened a while back, it was the lazer whitening it was the worst experience of my life! It was fine whilst the guy was carrying out the procedure but as soon as he had finished my teeth were so sensitive, i couldn;t even open my mouth for a day, breathing hurt! however, H2B had no after effects, so i think it does depend on you and your teeth. Neither of our teeth looked much whiter afterwards though, they just looked brighter!

If you are going to pay someone to do it I would pay more and use your dentist rather than anyone else, like a beauty salon or someone who comes round to your house.

I had a home-kit, made by my dentist - bleaching gel in trays that sit over your teeth during the night. I lasted two nights - the pain was dreadful. Google "zingers". I had to take codeine (for the first time in my life). Tried one final shot a few weeks later, after brushing with Sensodyne in the interim, and taking a codeine tablet before I even put the trays in. That was much better, but suspicious that I didn't actually put any effective amount of bleach into the trays.... BUt as above, some people can manage it no bother.

I have recently used crest whitening strips (the intensive professional ones) you can buy them on ebay and they cost around 40-60 for a seven day course.

I just tried it out for one day to see how it worked/if it worked and I noticed a difference after only two hours, it wasn't massive but I think after a weeks course I would have been quite happy.

They do however make your teeth really quite sensitive so I would combine with a good toothpaste and I the packs come with a re-mineralisation thingy to help too.

Whitening treatment was included "free" with my braces- so when they came off I had mine done.

It was a home kit from the dentist. I had gum shield type things and had to put gel (bleach) in them. I then wore it for an hour every night before bed for 14 days.

I must say, I was skeptical before trying it but it was actually brilliant. After the 14 days I went back and there was 12 shades difference ?

I didn't experience any sensitivity or discomfort whilst using it, or afterwards- but I know that's completely hit and miss and can vary a lot from one person to the next (or even from one treatment to the next)

I was very happy with the results, which lasted about 6 months. Not sure i'd be happy to pay £200 every 6 months for it, but i'll definitely be getting them done again in the lead up to the wedding.
