Has anyone had this before? (ear problems)

Buffy Somers, 29 December, 2008 at 10:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

On Christmas night my left ear suddenly felt 'blocked'. Went to Boots on Boxing Day and got some ear drops, however by the next day my right ear felt the same, although not as bad. It's not painful, just uncomfortable, and trying to hear the customers at work is a nightmare!. I'm fairly sure it's just a build up of wax, however if it has'nt improved by tomorrow I'm going to try and make an appointment to see a doctor. Has anybody else had this?. I'm terrified I'm going to end up having them syringed! ?

Could be wax, or sometimes after I've had a cold, the pressure gets a bit messed up and the eardrum gets drawn in and I can't hear as well.

I'd book an appointment for GP or even the practice nurse to have a look - syringing is fine though!

Oooh I had this in about April time after a bout of tonsiltis except both ears were blocked. It was rubbish especially as I work on a telephone advice line and it was a nightmare to hear the clients! The drs were really reluctant to syringe them tbh every time I phoned they kept telling me to try working warm olive oil into it to soften the wax. Mine were still really bad after a few weeks however and they eventually did syringe them however they said to me they don't go in that deep nowadays so it doesn't always work. It wasn't sore, it was actually quite pleasant in a weird sort of way just like warm water being flushed in and out of the ears ? - it cleared them a wee bit and then eventually they just "popped" and cleared on their own.

Sounds like blocked eustachian tubes - do you get temporary relief if you hold your nostrils closed and blow? (get a popping feeling?) Last time this happened to me the doctor said that something over the counter like Otravine spray was as good as anything he'd prescribe in the first instance. Mine came on after a cold and took a week or so to properly shift.

I've had this twice, it's what BGB has described. Did lots of nose squeezing, holding breath and blowing down my nose. Took a few days to shift. Doc said try chewing gum as well.

Otrivine definitely good - especially if you lie down and squirt it right to the back of your head. Be warned it tastes repulsive ?

Be careful with the holding nose and blowing thing - sometimes that can reeeeeeally hurt.
