Has anyone used a professional 'de-clutterer'?

Hugo Brambles, 7 December, 2008 at 17:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

You know the sort of thing they used to do on Life Laundry? I was thinking of getting my mum a day's worth of help as she is such a horder she could do with help in sorting and organising.

Anyone used someone before?

No, but I'd happily do it for free. I loooove decluttering, sorting and organising.

On a more serious note, hoarding is always about more than not getting round to throwing things out. When friends and others have asked me to declutter for them (knowing how much I love it) I've always found it to be a fairly traumatic experience for them. Whatever the reason was that prompted them to refuse to throw things out in the first place gets brought up during the clean out. I've learnt to proceed with caution and that it helps if you ask them to start throwing things out before you arrive. That way they have an opportunity to decide whether they really want to go ahead or not.

WSS. I love doing it. I wish people would ask me more often - I find it so cathartic - even when it's someone else's stuff.

I am itching to get my hands on my MIL's house! I love de-cluttering (I think that must be why I don't 'tidy as I go', so I can enjoy the lovely cathartic feeling!).. However, the MIL would probably endure torture and pain on a sustained basis rather than do it! She has 4 wardrobes, with clothes in ranging from a size 10 to a size 24, she's a 22 now, and hasn't been a size 10 since she was 25!! (And that is quite a few years ago, H is 31 in January!!!).

Why have clothes that don't fit you in there? Think of all the space you could have to fill all over again!!

I've not used her for clutter clearing but my old Alexander technqiue teacher does this - if you're in North London and you want the recommendation, shout!

She's lovely and would be ruthless without you even realising, I suspect ?

Rache, you can come and clutter clean here if you are desperate for a good session. Preferably in the next 2 weeks so I can get our Xmas tree up. ?

Oooh I'd love to do it for her. I'm a clutter-free reformed hoarder, from a hoarding family. We live in a tiny 2 bed terrace but manage to keep it lovely and tidy. I cleared out my paperwork folders last night and I feel great today ?

Do any of the declutter fairies live near me? You're more than welcome to come and sort me out!

ETA so long as you promise not to touch my books - you can clear Simon's out though!

I genuinely need someone like Kim and Aggie. My house is more than just cluttered, and it's a huge issue that's actually affecting my marriage. It's just all got on top of me and made my life ***. I think if it were all sorted I'd keep on top of it, but on my own it's a mountain I don't know how to start climbing.

Maybe we should sort out a Hitched declutter? Those who need help get matched up with someone near them who loves decluttering? I'm serious! I think it would be great.

Doughnut - that sounds a fab idea - I know I'd appreciate it (even if Simon doesn't). Oddly I can declutter if I have someone helping me but I am terrible. I had a friend help me when I lived at home many years ago and 7 bags of rubbish and 2 bags for the charity shop later... Also Simon helped in the run up to us moving in together - we got rid of so much! Sadly now we live together we've discovered we're as bad as each other so no help to each other.

Wow, you really are dedicated to your family or you really really like clutter clearing! ?

I've even got my friend's book on how to clutter clear, but I've got it cluttering up my hard drive, unread. [wail]

OHs is my de-clutterer ?. And I'm not too bad with de-cluttering either. Although I do like to keep hold of some sentimental stuff, which OH would just bin it.

We have a spare room, with a cupboard that has a bit of rubbish in it but we will be decorating this room next year, so will be having a good clear out then.

Would love to have a good clear out of sils house. my brother says she makes a shelf out of anything. ie. a small lip/ledge on the fireplace, the top of a socket in the kitchen, most radiators. there is just 'stuff' everywhere.
