Has anyone used a university for a wedding?

Laura Styles, 19 March, 2014 at 11:17 Posted on Planning 0 15

I went to a conference at the University of York last week and suddenly had a brain wave.. I could hire out their facilities for the wedding. Me and OH are struggling to find somewhere we agree on but this is one neither of us have a really strong opinion on so far.

Has anyone else been to a wedding at a university? It's not what springs to mind when I think 'romantic' but at least it's something a bit different.

A friend considered conference facilities at our university for her wedding. Lovely room, french doors onto long lawn etc. But it wasn't cheap, and she decided against it for being a bit corporate-y (real word).

Helenia and Saisi had some kind of university involvement, I think.

From the photography point of view I have shot a few weddings at Leicester university and im not sure about your uni circumstances but the Leicester building where the receptions were held was right on the edge of Victoria park and as such had far more "nice " areas / grounds than some hotels that I have worked at, so hopfully yours has some nice campus grounds too that you can use.

I've been to a wedding at Keele University - it has its own stately home in the grounds where you have the ceremony and reception, with a lake and grounds around it! /weddings-at-keele-hall/ There wasn't many students around with it being the weekend, so it didn't feel like a university. It was quite pricey though!

Does York hold a lot of weddings?

Yes. I am getting married at Edinburgh Napier Univeristy in September and I can't wait. It's a lovely campus and it's where me and my partner met so it makes it a bit more special. The Uni have allowed us to book with them even though we will only have half the number of guests they usually set as their minimum. And the grounds are great, if it wasn't September and I could have been sure of the weather it would have been lovely to set up a gazebo outside etc.

Not sure how I add pictures, but their facebook page is here https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=812792162070588&set=pb.433909963292145.-2207520000.1395235008.&type=3&theater#!/EdinburghNapierWeddings?fref=ts

We originally wanted to have our wedding in Edinburgh and very nearly went with Pollock Halls which is part of Edinburgh Uni. As alumni we were entitled to a ten percent discount. Also if you have your wedding in the university holidays quite often family can hire out accommodation in halls.

I got married at Keele the first time around. Stunning building and beautiful surroundings but you're right, not cheap.

I went to a wedding at Oxford University and it was stunning. I was at uni at Northampton when I got engaged and suddenly started seeing advertising all round campus for their wedding package. Northampton looked a bit more corporate than Oxford though.

Yeah, definitely want something that's a nice old building with pretty surroundings. It's definitely not a cheap option, but just something a bit different I think. I've booked in to go an have a look 'round all of the Uni of York buildings as they've got loads of different ones.

So excited Smiley laugh I hope the suites aren't too business-y. The one we had for our conference was really modern as it was meant for business events, but York Conferences do do special wedding packages so fingers crossed those are a bit different, I'm definitely more of a traditional girl Smiley smile There are a few that i've seen on the site that look gorgeous and the uni is huge so hoping I'll be spoilt for choice. It will be a nice luxury after not being able to find somewhere suitable for so long.

Emmieloos - That's what I'm trying to avoid, things looking too corporate. I bet Oxford was amazing. York is a similar old town with lots of listed buildings so fingers crossed Smiley smile

Love is easy - Thanks for the suggestion, could you drop me a PM? I can't imagine using a school, but it's certainly different Smiley smile

My OH and I met at Durham uni. You can get married at Durham castle, which is also one of the colleges, and is awesome for photos, BUT not in the slightest wheelchair friendly which we needed. The photos would have been awesome, it's also spitting distance from the cathedral, gorgeous.

I've shot weddings at a couple of universities, both were older, very beautiful buildings with decent gardens. It wasn't obvious that they were academic buildings at all during the day and neither felt corporate in any way. I'm not familiar with the one at York specifically though, I guess it depends on the building itself and what they can offer you.

    Good luck Smiley smile

Laura - I'm on bridesmaid duty at a wedding there at the end of May! Having walked around with the bride to be, it's actually v lovely. We'll be using the uni accommodation and the wedding itself is at King's Manor, which is SOOOO pretty - http://yorkconferences.com/Data/Banner/326286ae-efa4-48ed-a664-f78a3a38c0e5/The%20Kings%20Manor.jpg

Definitely ask them about looking around at least. When is the big day? If you can hold on until late May, I can feedback to you from there Smiley smile
