Have I made a mistake??....

In getting a harpist for the arrivals, ceremony and drinks?

Throughout wedding planning I have been a big believer in not wasting money on frills on the day that don't really make much of a difference. I was quite happy with having a CD played during the ceremony and looking forward to putting some of our favourite songs to walk up and down the aisle with etc.

Everytime I have been to wedding fayres, my mother (who is always nagging me to have the frills!) has suggested some sort of musician. Last time it was a guitar man, the time before a string quartet. But I have always said no because at £400-500 I just don't think they are worth it.

However, on Sunday I went to another one with my fiance and he saw a harpist and said he really would like it. She costs £300. He said that he like the string quartet too but thought they were a bit too expensive and thought the harpist was ideal. So I agreed and gave her a cheque for the deposit.

Ever since I have been worried whether I have done the right thing. Playing a CD would've cost nothing at all. Also I had some ideas of songs I want to include in the wedding but I don't know where these can be part of the day now (we have already chosen our 1st dance song).

So everyone, do you think I have done the right thing?

it all comes down to what you want and can afford. We are having a String quartet to play during the meal, but playing CDs during the ceremony and then have a wedding singer and a DJ at night.

its not a mistake if you want her and can afford her

    Hiya,

well our venue 'reccommended' (basically said we had to!) we have a harpist or string quartet from their suppliers list.

we chose the harpist and she seems brilliant, and is playing a lot of modern songs throughout the signing of register and welcome drinks, as well as the 'entrance' and 'exit', shes also staying around for the wedding breakfast.

we are having our favourite songs played by the band, and also in between sets on an Ipod playlist were putting together which will be played through their PA system.

Cat you have all your favourite songs played in the evening?

Or if its important to you to have them played during the ceremony you could ask the harpist if she can play them, and if not then maybe consider cancelling -I know youve paid the deposit -but if you really dont want it......

The only problem is one of the songs is Paul Weller 'you do something to me' The rest are all quite slow as well. After one slushy first dance song, I feel the rest of the evening should be more upbeat. Its also a song that on a harp won't do justice.

The other problem is I suppose the wedding shouldn't be just about what I want. My fiance really wanted the harpist, my mother has always been keen on the idea (and she is paying). So I guess it's just difficult for me as it's my first compromise so far in the planning!!

I just really like the guitar sound to that song - it's what makes it for me. I was thinking of having these leftover songs put as the background music on the video, but not everyone will hear that and it won't have the same on the day impact.

No one can tell you if your wrong or right - only you know that. If you can afford it then why not. If booking her means that you cant have something else that you want then cancel. How much was deposit?

For what its worth we had a sax player at ceremony, jazz cd during arrival drinks, magician and a jazz trio for the evening.

It's important that your fiance doesn't feel shut out during the wedding planning. If he's keen on this harpist then you probably did the right thing. It all depends on what the cost is in relation to the rest of your wedding. For example, £300 in a £20,000 budget isn't much and I wouldn't worry about it. £300 in a £5,000 budet is a big deal and you might want to reconsider if it's not something you're 100% happy with.
