Have you/would you ever stop a stranger in the street and ask where they got their bag/shoes/jacket etc etc?

Roobarb, 1 May, 2009 at 12:23 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

I was in town the other day and I saw a woman carrying a handbag which would just be perfect with the shoes/outfit I've got for Jonathan's christening next weekend and I was soooo tempted to go and ask her where she got it. But decided against it as I feared she would think I was an arse/nutter. So I've got something else instead which is nowhere near as nice (but was only £3 out of Primark, admittedly!)

So if you coveted a stranger's goods would you ask them where they'd got them from?

Yes, and I have done in the past, and have had it done to me too. I was so pleased, honestly, it made my day!

I've never done it to anyone, but I would if I saw something fab. I've had it done to me lots of times, actually, which is very flattering.

Someone came up to me a few months ago, and asked me where I got my coat from. I said something along the lins of 'Tesco, last weekend, £25, should have some left'

I personally have never done it, but I know friends that do.

Yes I would and have done. It's made me feel great when people have done it to me. Some people think you're a bit weird but that's fair enough I suppose. Don't be scared, ask people!

This seems to happen all the time in aldi. people always seem to be peering into your trolley and asking where you picked up the sun dried tomatoes or whatever ?

i probably would ask someone...but i think yorkshire people have a reputation of forthrightness and bluntness to adhere to ?

Someone asked me about my bag on the way to work once. And I've been asked about a top I had on once. I have asked people as well, but only in bars when I've had a bit of Dutch courage ?

    ?

I wish I had asked now. Just tried to look for it online but it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

I do it a lot. I think it's a compliment. My H does it as well. Many times I've been given gifts and he's asked some random in the street where they got something from so he can get it for me.

Yes definitely and I'm another who' s pleased when it happens the other way too. I've also asked people about their pushchairs and have had someone ask me if they can push my pushchair to see what it's like.

Apart from one occassion in the swimming pool changing room, where I said I liked a girls dress, and was about to ask where it was from, and she looked me up & down and said (well sneered actually) 'oh, do you?" I rather imagined her to rush home and bin it as she couldn't possibly wear a dress that the fat old biffer at the pool liked.

I do it ALL the time. I work in London and see a real mix of lovely clothes / shoes / bags. I'm forever complimenting and asking where they got said item from.

I am sure people have asked me about things the children have had on, but not me. Funny that, as I consider myself SUCH a fashun icon ?

Gah, I so wish I had asked now. But she'd probably have said "yes, it's from Stella McCartney and cost £700 and then I'd have had to pretend that yes, despite the fact I was dressed in top to toe Matalan, I really WAS going to go and buy it.

I don't suppose anyone has seen a biggish, plain, patent bright turquoise handbag anywhere have they? ?

Yes, I have done and I've been really flattered when people have done it to me. I especially like it when someone asks where I got something and I am able to say "I got it in a little shop in NYC I'm afraid" as I feel all jet set. ?

One of the nicest things that ever happened was on the way to my Mum's wedding. A man rushed across the street, turned to Mr W and said "I'm not coming on to your wife" and then said to me "I just had to tell you that I think you look absolutely wonderful. That dress is beautiful". IT made my day. Actually, it made my year. ?

I did it today! I did wonder whether to, but this woman's jacket was so fabulous I had to ask. She wasn't in the street, she was walking down the stairs in a hospital ?

    I think it's OK - it's a compliment, isn't it?

I bought a couple of bits in San Francisco, just tshirts and stuff, and I love it when people ask me where I got them from.

That is a lovely story, I would be chuffed to bits ?

Oh yes, I do, and I love being asked.

I have a pair of brown sandals that every time I wear them, I get asked about them. I debuted them for the first time this year yesterday and two people asked me about them. I'm such an icon ?

This thread reminds me - whilst I do ask strangers about stuff I love, I remember once really loving a pair of jeans that a mum at my son's nursery was wearing at a party once. Trouble is she really intimidated me, and was quite snotty, so I felt I couldn't ask. So all party I kept trying to find excuses to get so close to her jeans that I could read the tiny writing on the rivets. ? I must have looked barking mad. It was Gap, incidentally and no, I never have found them.

How funny, I was in Schuh today and saw a woman trying on Shoes of Complete Fabulousness. I told her she had to buy them. Where your lady's shoes pillarbox red and v. high by any chance? ?

I've asked people before about where they got stuff (usually handbags, it has to be said) and have also done the pushchair thing too. People always seem really flattered, and pleased.

Yes I've done it a couple of times and had it happen to me too - I must admit I was very flattered to be asked, as were the people I have stopped, and I wouldn't find it weird or annoying if someone did ask me.

I do get asked from time to time, and it's always lovely! I am also partial to asking people if I like something, or just saying that someone looks nice when they do. I have a random pair of battered ankle boots that always get comments, and people always note them if I post a pic of me on Flickr.

OH is always nicking a few of my bags and trackie tops (I have some coool vintage satchels and 70s tracksuits) he *always* passes them off as his own if her gets complimented. This p i sses me off no end when I can remember buying them in the mid-90s before you had the joys of the internet to make such purchases easy >Smiley sad
