Having a tooth removed

Ann-Louise, 10 February, 2009 at 10:45 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Anyone here that's had a tooth removed? I've got a hole in one of my bottom back teeth. I've got an appointment at the dentist tomorrow and i know they will want me to go back to have it pulled out but i'm terrified about how much it will hurt! How bad is it? Makes me feel sick just thinking about it!

It shouldn't hurt at all.!! The dentist will make sure you are completely numb before they start. If you have any concerns, tell your dentist when you go in & they can reassure you. Hope you get on ok.

It doesn't hurt at all and I'm the biggest Jessie out there. The worst part is the noise, a creaking so take an ipod with you and have some music on. Honestly it's really not bad.

I've had two of my back teeth removed. Having them taken out didn't hurt at all. obviously you can feel that it is being taken out but there is no pain as the dentist numbs the surrounding area completely.

The only pain I had with both of them was about 6 hours after when the anaesthetic wore off and I was able to take the little bit of gauze out. I took a couple of painkillers and I was pretty much fine. Also be prepared that your cheek may swell up as mine did but then saying that my friend had her rear tooth removed was fine afterwards. I think my pain and swelling was more down to the fact that the root on my tooth was splayed.

My friend also had her tooth taken out at the anaesthetic clinic so she was put to sleep when it was removed as like you the thought of it made her feel sick. Would that be an option for you at all?

Ask if the dentist can refer you to have it removed while using intravenous conscious sedation (I think that's what it's called, they basically sedate you but you're still conscious, just waay out of it) - it's fab. I've had two impacted wisdom teeth removed and I honestly dont remember a thing about either one.

Its not bad at all. It just feels like a bit of pressure and then the tooth is out. You don't feel any pain.

Do tell them - they're used to frightened people! I had my last milk tooth out in November (at the age of 35!) and I couldn't help but tell them that my previous dental nurse would hold my hand when I had the injections - that's the bit I don't like, the extraction is ok - and they were lovely about it.
