Having an accommodation nightmare! Aaagh! (Gloucestershire)

PhoenixAngelic, 5 October, 2011 at 13:32 Posted on Planning 0 18

To give you the background. We originally thought we'd take a block booking of rooms at the Inn which sits just up the road from our venue. After a series of disasters and an official complaint to Head Office, we decided not to risk it (and given the most recent reviews on Trip Advisor it seems we were right in that decision!).

So from there we went to another potential hostelry in Tetbury. Booked in for a viewing of rooms and a lunch in the hope that this would prove to be the answer. Rooms ok but very overpriced for what they are which is more basic than a Travel Inn but double the cost. Lunch was a bit of a disaster - lovely food but it took far too long to arrive. When we raised this with the owner, his explanation wasn't quite up to par. No real apology and definitely not bending over backwards to sort it out - not being a bridezilla but when you've explained to a supplier than you've had a nightmare with another, they would usually do their utmost to be the preferred choice! So we left with the knowledge that to continue with them was a bit of a risk and a niggling doubt remained.

So this last weekend we go exploring and end up at another local venue which appeared to be the answer to our prayers. Plenty of rooms, really nice food and no further away from Matara than Tetbury is. Would even be able to provide us with a meal on the Friday evening. Sorted!

NOT! They have just emailed to say that they have another wedding on the same day and that wedding party requires all of their rooms for accommodation.

There is no room at the Inn.

And now we're struggling to find anything which is a) affordable but of a reasonable quality, b) within a short distance of our wedding venue and c) available!

If anyone can recommend somewhere which is, say, within 7 miles of the Matara Centre at Kingscote and is reasonably priced (say c.£100 per room per night B&B) I would be extremely grateful. We can probably find somewhere to have the rehearsal dinner if necessary although it would be nice to have it at the same place if poss.

Barring a lottery win and the chance to take over the big house on site, I'm at a loss to know what to do just now and it seems as time goes on our options are becoming ever more limited as other brides/grooms get their bookings in first. Please help!

    Beat me to it!

www.cottages4you.com and all the others only issue is that they probably wouldnt let you hire for just one night.

You could try companies like SACO who hire out appartments instead of hotels?

How many rooms do you need? The Old House at Home has a few and is lovely food but not sure if it exceeds distance but I'm guessing most people could share transport costs?

How many rooms (Beds) do you need for sleeping? Also howmany people would you have at dinner?

I had my wedding reception at Kingscote Barn and lots of or guests stayed at hunters hall and were happy with the accomadation (Handy hint look for offers online before you book)

The Hare and Hounds usually get's good reviews for food and rooms as well.

If your happy with people sleeping in different venues there are a few nice B and Bs in Tetbury

    As for eating

Egypt mill is nice (and if you have a large enough party they may use the function room for you if they till have it)

Gumstool Inn at Calcot also nice

The snoty fox in tetbury does lovely food (don't know about the rooms)

FOr our wedding night OH and I stayed here

couldn't fault them for service allowed OH to check in early and us to arrive late when we explained the situation, and left us a snak in ur room in case we were tired after our long day, so they might be worth talking to.

Thank you so much for the ideas - keep them coming!

Hunters is the place we've had all the problems with and recent reviews suggest no improvements, despite the assurances of Head Office that all would be sorted.

Priory was the one we had a wobble with. Egypt Mill was our hoped for miracle but unfortunately they are fully booked out.

Wouldn't think it would be so difficuilt would you?

When are you getting married? Tetbury area gets stupidly busy at certain times of year. How rigidly do you have to stick to your 7 mile limit? Could you widen your search area to say stroud/ malmsbury?

    Try not to stress

is it really that important? people will only be using the room to get ready & somewhere to lay their head down for the night. they are not going to spend a lot of time in the rooms so something basic may be absolutely fine.

im not sure what the problems are with the couple of places you have already tried but if people are only there for 1 night as a place to sleep then it could be ok?

Unfortunately the one which is closest has proved to be very lacking in terms of customer service/quality of food/reliability so we really can't risk it. As you say, it is somewhere to rest your head ultimately but we need to ensure that people can get some sleep and a decent meal at some point. We really don't need anything too grand (hence why we haven't even suggested the most lovely Hotel/Spa which is nearby - much as I'd LOVE to! hehehe).

We need 10 rooms potentially but they don't necessarily need to be in the same place (though it would be lovely), just so long as they are nearby so we can gather without too much trouble.

I will get to checking out the others which have been put forward but if anyone has any other suggestions - including anything outside the 7 mile radius I stated yesterday - then please post it. I'm on the hunt now!

    Thank you so much everyone!

Have just had a conversation with The Amberley Inn. EXTREMELY helpful young lady who answered the phone. All the right answers. Only one query in that it was taken over yesterday by new owners but apparently all staff are remaining in situ so hopefully that will ensure continuity.

Anyone been there at all? Any comments/thoughts?

I know the Amberley inn, it's ok from what I have heard, although I would recommend the black horse pub in Amberley for food.

If you don't mind being in different places to sleep I would seriously consider looking at some of the B and Bs in Tetbury, there are plenty of nice places to eat and get a drink (Amberley is a bit more isolated)
