Having the implant out..

Jemima Renrut, 4 January, 2013 at 19:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

The contraception thread reminded me to ask, I need my implant out, my 3 years is up. Can't decide whether to have it back in again or not but that's a different matter. My question is how do they do it? does it hurt? I'm the first if ny friends with it in to have it out...

They put local anaesthetic in, make a small cut (~0.5cm) and fish it out. Some come out easier than others, as per missrae's experience. Mine wasn't sore, though there was a bit of pulling/tugging at it - it often gets scar tissue forming around it which can be tough.

Mine was hideous. Women was fudging around in there for ages, to the point that the local had worn off and I had to have another injection. . I think I was just unlucky though, quite a few of my friends have had them out with no problem at all.

Sorry to add to the horror stories, I had mine taken out after 9 months because I didn't get along with it, I had a local anaesthetic and the nurse took about 20 minutes to get it out as it wasn't easy, my mum came with me and had to leave the room because of the blood! Hope yours is easy!

Maybe decide if you want it again based on how easy it comes out, and whether or not you'd be happy to have another taken out? I know I wouldn't be!!!

I have had two of them now and had no issues with implantation or removal. I had it removed once my three years was up to see if we could get pregnant and one week later I conceived!! As soon as I could after baby was born, I had it put in as I think this is the best form of contraception for me (have tried most others!)

I haven't got it but I have two friends who have.

They have both had completely different experiences. One hardly felt it being removed, the other girl needed multiple nurses to remove it.

I guess like a lot of things everyone has their own experience.

I'm squeemish, there is no way someone would put that in my arm in the first place, I'm bad enough with jabs for holidays!!

I got mine out in November. Didn't hurt but took ages of tugging! Worse bit is the big scar I have from it!

Kind of I wish I hadn't asked now! Lol. It's the best that's worked for me I've had no problems on it, but I don't want it in again if in a year's time we decide to TTC. I did try to talk to OH about it but he started babbling. I know he wants kids, and i don't want a deadline would just like to know if he'd like one in the next couple of years... do you need to know before you go if you want it replaced? Do they do it at same time?

When I had my last one out, she put the new one in through the same hole, so I only got one scar from that procedure. If you've not made your mind up though, it's not the end of the world, you'd just have to get a second appointment to get a new one put in if you decided later on to have it.

It may not be applicable to you, but it's worth mentioning - if you do want a new one, check with wherever's doing it if they keep them in stock or if you have to get a prescription and pick one up from the pharmacy. I had to do this last time as my GP doesn't stock them.

Well this thread has just made me cross the implant off my potential contraceptive list.

I had mine out the week before Christmas and it was fine. Having it put in was awful, made me cry and left a huge bruise for weeks so I was dreading removal but it was over before I even realised and didn't hurt at all.

My first one came out easy peasy, they put the new one in the opposite arm, the second one was a bit ch to get out and she put the new on in the same place- I was bruised and sore in that spot for about two weeks,

Would still do it again cause the implant seems to work well for me, although hopefully TTC after the wedding so not sure what will happen!

Can I just thoroughly reassure anyone now put off the implant about how to make the removal of it easier? I fiddled with mine in the weeks leading up to its removal. If you have left it in place withotu fiddlign with it for three years yes it will be difficult to remove. When my last one was removed it slipped out without any issue at all. The nruse commented that it was the easiest she had ever had to remove. It really amkes a massive difference, so in the time leading up to the appointment to ahev it removed fiddle with it as much as possible. Mine has another year to go and I've just tried to fiddle with it and if someone tried to remove it I would imagine it would be really difficult as it has just sat there for two years with my flesh growing around it.

this is probably a fair point as I did use to play about with mine all the time so it hadn't just been left for 3 years !

I feel proud to have encouraged a group of women to fiddle with their implants?
