Healthier options for my pasta?

sweetersong, 16 September, 2008 at 16:38 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 10

I have just found out my "healthy" pasta bake has approx 10 WW points per serving ☹️

This is what I use (I make 6 portions from it):

500g Napolina Whole Wheat Fusilli

2 x 400g Napolina Chopped Tomatoes

2 x 140g (drained) Princes tuna steak in sunflower oil

1 x 260g (drained) tesco sweetcorn in water and sugar

2 medium onions, 2-3 garlic cloves

Is there any alternatives I can swap in, or should I be making more portions out of that?

I don't do WW so can't comment from that side but personally the changes I would make would be

Pasta- a standard serving is 75g so only use 450g for 6 portions

Tuna- use either tuna in brine or if you're worried about the salt then the springwater one

sweetcorn - one of the few veg that isn't free so I'd use less (and swap from frozen rather with added sugar in the can) and add some other veg, mushrooms & peppers maybe?

Pretty much what Mrs M said. Swap the sweetcorn for something like mushrooms and peppers, use tuna in springwater rather than oil and less pasta - perhaps switch to a wholemeal pasta too. You could try using something like chick peas or bortolli beans instead of sweetcorn as well

Sorry eta to say I didn't read your thread properly and notice you are already using wholemeal pasta! DOH!

Thanks, will try and get a smaller bag of pasta next time, and the other veg options sound nice and yummy ?

Yea, I have already made the switch to wholewheat pasta, I can't tell the difference in taste, so that's good.

Pasta tends to come in standard size bags (usually 500g or 1kg or the huge 3kg I buy ?) but you could always weigh it ?and save the other 50g towards the next one

Didn't realise that (re the sizes) weighing it is then lol.

Going shopping tonight and going to be buying some healthier stuff for the cupboards.

This sort of thing really interests me. Please don't take it the wrong way sweetersong, but just a quick glance at that list and the tuna in oil and the corn in sugar really do glare out at me. I'm genuinely surprised that you didn't realise those could be upping the points/calorie count.

I think that portion size is fine for 6 although I think WW recommend 60g of pasta per person rather than the 75g given on the packets.

TBH the tuna and sweetcorn glare out at me too....sweetcorn is quite high in points for a small portion sadly.

I make a bake with lots of peppers, onions, mushrooms, tinned toms, spinach (which is yummy), tom puree, worcester sauce, some wine (2 tblsps) or a teeny bit of orange juice (sweetens the toms), then instead of lots of cheese I used a slice of bread whizzed up into breadcrumbs (1 point) which gives a nice crispy topping.

I only ever use a max of 75g of pasta per serving when padded out, sometimes 60g. Could you maybe have some salad with it?

If I have enough points left I sometimes put in a couple of slices of bacon too...you chop it quite small and it does give a flavour. Then you just divide the points across the dish.

    HTH....

    Thanks guys.

I think the Tuna I had last time was in brine, but because I was in a rush when I did my online shopping I picked the first thing on the list ?

BGB-I haven't been thinking healthy long, but I am trying to get there, thankyou for your advice though ?

The above works out at 6.5 points a serving, not ten. I've put it into the recipe builder for you.

LG-Now I am confused, thankyou though, wonder what I miscalculated (got a formula online that is supposed to calculate the points).

Hopefully once I get started I will have all the resources at my disposal it will be easier for me to keep a track on what points I am eating.
