Hello!

melc416, 29 October, 2013 at 16:08 Posted on Planning 0 21

Hello all,

This is my first ever forum experience. Me and my partner have been together for nearly 6 years and engaged for 3 years. Considering we have now been engaged for so long we have done no wedding planning at all!

We were engaged on Valentines Day after a meal. We are quite quiet people so it wasn't anything "flash". It was actually quite funny as he had the ring for over 6 months before he did it. I then said about a week before Valentines day (with no idea what he was planning) "I would hate to get engaged on Valentines Day". Well, he ignored my comments and went ahead. And actually it was really special :-)

We (I say we...) have now decided that after 3 years of engagement that we should start our planning. We have set ourselves an ideal goal of getting married in August 2015 (I am a teacher so summer is the ideal time). I know nearly 2 years seems like a long time but I fear it is going to go really quickly!

I'm really excited to finally get planning. We have really clear ideas of what we would like - I'm not sure if this will be a help or a hindrance!

Any help or advice I pick up on the way I will be really grateful for.

Thanks

Mel

Do you find it really hard to fit the planning in with teaching also? I find myself so exhausted at the end of the day/week!!

Hoping the holidays will be a great help!

I don't find it too much trouble as I'm pretty clued up on what I want lol so I always find the time for some wedding planning!

I'm getting married in August but had nearly two years for the run up. Try and research as much as you can whilst you have the time. I bought a few wedding mags (Wedding Ideas was good as it seems to have a lot of tips for low budget weddings like mine!) but then I stopped buying them as there was just too much choice. I very quickly narrowed it down to what kind of day I wanted (OH has similar tastes) so this has made planning pretty easy. We are on a tight budget too so that's been helpful in making me rule out things but obviously it's been a slight hindrance too!

I've actually found the wedding planning a great way to forget about school and focus on something different.

    Hello and welcome to hitched.

Two years is fine - definitely not too long to plan a wedding. You will be able to take it slowly, ensuring to are able to have the suppliers and the venue you want. Will also be able to pay for things as you go instead of having to pay for everything almost straight away (something I have done and slightly regret!)

Hope to see you around here more, there is some fab advice to be had

Hellooo Smiley smile Welcome to Hitched!

We were engaged for 3/4 years before we decided to get married and had a good idea about what we wanted. Until we opened our minds to planning that is and then we didn't know where to start! I hope your idea's are more set in stone then ours were lol.

    Happy Planning x

Hello & welcome to hitched! Smiley smile
Enjoy your stay, sure you'll enjoy it here loads of great help & advice.
It's never too early to plan, goes in so quickly!
You can start with guest lists, looking at venues caterers, togs etc and get some ideas of what you want.
Lists and more lists is the way forward!

Hello and welcome Mel. Quite a few of my brides are teachers and have to juggle things around the holidays. On the plus side, one had a 3 week honeymoon as it was in the 6 weeks holidays!

What type of plans are you thinking about so far?

Another teacher here! Wedding planning has definitely taken over my life and now have to figure out a wedding planning-life balance instead of lesson planning-life balance! Actually has made me realise how much I dawdle over planning, making resources and assessment stuff (am in nursery so no marking luckily!) as I'm still as on top of it all as ever with all the wedding stuff as well!

We're getting married April 2015 (middle of easter hols!), got engaged in August and the 2 months since then have absolutely flown by!

Welcome and congratulations! Lovely engagement story!

No worries about the nearly 2 years, you get to choose the pick of the best you'd want, one of the reasons from engagement to wedding we will have been planning it for 26 months, hehe.

Enjoy your planning and hope to see you here often!

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

We have a few plans in place. Nothing is booked yet - I never really know when to start calling? Is 2 years to soon?

We will be marrying in our small local church (suits us as we really don't want a big wedding).

We would really like our reception at this nice pub in the village with a pretty "garden room". I know a pub sounds very...tacky is what comes to my mind! But it is a nice pretty garden with loads of space.

We have very clear thoughts about the little things like the car and table decorations but not always about the bigger stuff! I just want to stay on budget (yeah right!) and small (again slightly doubtful...)

Not at all. So did I. Only place that would allow us outside caterers and not limit us to fixed packages. They were amazing.

I like the unusual and although pubs/restaurant venues are becoming popular I still favour them over the grand hotels and manor houses.
2 years isn't too early to call and enquire .. or even book. I have some 2015 bookings and 2016 enquiries!
You might even get some good deals for being an early bird, you never know.

Where in the world will you be getting married? ?
