Hello and thoughts??

Dreamysmiles, 9 July, 2013 at 14:16 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hi iv been here and posting for a bit but think I better introduce myself.

My names suzi, me and the OH have been together 6 and a half years. We have a little girl, Liv, who is 18 months. My man proposed at beginning of June. Very sweet and romantic. He spelt out the words will you marry me on our picnic blanket when we were out with out little girl. We stay in Greenock. (near Glasgow)

So now the wedding stuff.....we are hoping for 2015. We are going to see our preferred venue on Saturday. It's an old country house. It has views of the sea and we would have exclusive use for 2 nights. It is considered self catering so we wouldn't have any staff there. It's only 30 mins away from our home.

We were thinking because there is no staff we would just make the whole day feel quite informal. We are going to have all the guests be there all day so no separate evening only guests. We have about 70-80 guests.

Ideas so far are....

Ceremony in the gardens, OHs godfather will do the honours. Non religious very intimate and personal

Bbq instead of 3 course meal. Maybe ask them about desert too. Catering company would collect plates and do clear up. Think we might use long tables to give family feel whilst doing toasts etc so more informal when people are eating.

Ceilidh at beginning of night but only for 3-4 hours

instead of usual evening buffet, we think we might have local chip shop help us get fish and chip cones ready. Not sure if this would seem too informal after the BBQ

Have our (very musical) family and friends play there own instruments with speakers etc that we hire. Our family LOVE this idea, any excuse to perform! When not playing have an iPod on in background

There is no bar (self catering) so providing our own. No corkage yay!! But how much drink should I provide? My family have already suggest they all take there own as we will be there for 2 nights. The house can sleep 40 ppl. But we will provide all wine for meal, champagne for toasts, all the mixtures and maybe some large summer punch bowls to help with BBQ theme,

I'm hoping for a family party/house party/back garden BBQ feeling.

Does this sound ok or too informal? If you don't like it, feel free to say so....I'm very thick skinned and would prefer honest thoughts Smiley smile

Sorry if this post is all over the place I just read it back ?

    This sounds AMAZING. Honestly. Amazing.

My cousin did something very similar and it was brilliant.

To me this sounds bliss! It sounds like it would be a lovely relaxed day.

It would work well too. I shot a wedding where the ceremony was in the Groom's Parents garden and it was amazing. They were very fortunate with the weather and all their guests were say on blankets watching.

They also had Ceilidh dancing, first time I had seen it. Wow you get swung about ?.

They provided their own drink and bought kegs from the local brewery which worked well.

If you want to see the gallery for ideas then just let me know.

Love your ideas - feeling jealous actually! Fish and chips in cones will go down really well so do stick with that! Regarding the wine, our venue told us to estimate half a bottle per person on average - include both red and white in that and round up the number a bit to help. I love the idea of having your family play their instruments - it will really make the day more personal.

I would love to see the gallery for ideas.

To keep it informal we were thinking jars with hessian and lace for a lean towards smart but now thinking centrepieces of big bowls of sweetes to keep in fun?

There are several "reception" rooms. So one will be bar area and dancing, the other will be kids play room (we will make activity packs) and thinking of having a corner of the make entrance hall set up as a photo booth but will make it ourselves. Thinking a big bit of wood, hole with large photo frame then small photo frames around it it's loads of family pics so it looks like our hallway, If you see what I mean??

So many ideas and only one wedding haha

Sounds awesome!! Totally relaxed and laid back... I don't think the fish and chip cones would be too informal after the BBQ! It all sounds delicious!

Sounds immense, although with the good old British weather I would consider what your back up options are if the weather on the day is not in your favour, would you be erecting a marquee in the garden or is there a large dinning space inside?

This is similar to what we are planning, a totally informal BBQ in a venue with lovely indoor and outdoor space. I love the idea of an outdoor ceremony (weather permitting) and may need to ask my venue if this is an option.

Free corkage sounds like a huge plus to me. I'm quite sure my guests would be only too happy to bring along their own to save the bar prices!

They have what is called a vinery where we will be eating etc , it's basically a fancy conservatory lol. Sorry common as muck! Getting married anywhere on the grounds is completely fine especially as licence is held with person in Scotland not venue. There are picnic benches outside that I may put some decorations on especially I setting married outside. If the weather is rubbish we will be married in the entrance hall at the bottom of the staircase. It's such a lovely venue I would love to flash but don't know how to do it on my iPad

Hi daffodilwaves I seen the pics they are lovely. The overall feel of their day is the same thing I want.

Im glad you all think it's ok, I was worrying that it wasn't going to be weddingy enough for others.

People like that though. I had one on Saturday that had a tea party theme. Now we see it a lot on here but you should have seen the guests faces. It was like something they had never seen before. The couple had also provided outdoor games, a bouncy castle etc and it went down a storm. All evening the guests were commenting about how original it had been and the best wedding they had been too. Why? Because it was different to any other wedding most had been to.

Go for it. Have exactly what you want there and people will have an amazing time!

Hi I Just uploaded some pics of the venue, some of the outside and a couple of inside pics. I will take more this weekend when I'm visiting so that when I'm thinking of other ideas I can get a feel of it laid out etc.
