Hello everyone!

IGB2B, 29 October, 2013 at 10:36 Posted on Planning 0 27

Hi, I'm another new girl to these forums and thought I'd introduce myself!

My boyfriend and I have been together for just under a year but knew within weeks that we wanted to get married. We're now taking the plunge properly and have an appointment booked later this week to get my engagement ring designed. I'm terribly excited as we will be using the diamond from my grandmother's engagement ring so I will always feel as though she is with me. She and my grandfather had a very long and happy marriage so I hope some of that luck runs off on me via the diamond too!

Once the ring is finished, my OH can propose properly and we'll set a date (hopefully for summer 2014; I don't want a long engagement). Planning will begin in earnest then! Has anyone else got engaged like this? Where you'd both discussed it loads in advance of the actual proposal?!

We will be getting married in central London and I've done some initial enquiries about reception venues. Extortionate prices!!! If anyone has any suggestions for a romantic but reasonably priced central London venue for a reception, I'd be tremendously grateful!

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to collecting ideas and tips through the Hitched forums.

    Hi,

yes like you my partner and I are not yet officially engaged but are buying stuff for and planning our wedding. Others may find this strange but it works for us. We're both in our 40's and I can't face the endless questions and comments that I feel will come if we announce our engagement. My brother and his wife live abroad and will be visiting either summer 2014 or 2015. Our plan is to tie in with their visit. We will announce our engagement at the same time as inviting people to the wedding.

Can't help with London venues as I live in Nottingham. Good luck though, I used to work in London and know how expensive it is.

Hello and welcome to Hitched! Central London- depends what you'd consider reasonably priced, I'd look into hotels perhaps, I've shot at the doubletree opposite libertys and with all the fairy lights outside it was pretty beautiful. A lot of the cheaper venues are gastro pubs/village halls etc. so there's many avenues (see what I did there?!) that you can go down!

Welcome and congrats on your pseudo-engagement!

I think is very sweet you are using your grandma;s diamond, is a lovely thought and I also believe the luck passes down ?

Unfortunaly I can't related to the whirlwind romance, we here were together for almost 4 years before he proposed (out of the blue!) and only then we started planning.

But I also considered London for weddings, and have done my share of research into it.

Would you like ceremony and reception at the same space? How "central" are we talking about - close to which area?

The ceremony will be in a church opposite St James's Park so we'd like the reception to be fairly close by - basically Westminster / Victoria area. Admittedly, it'll be easier to actually plan once we've set a date. And I expect we'll find many places may already be booked up for summer 2014. Whatever will be, will be. I'm fairly chilled out; the actual ceremony is the important bit - we've already had a couple of informal chats with the priest about that!

The fact you are having a ceremony at the church, opens a whole range of options!

Have a look at hotels, pubs, bars and blank canvas spaces. There is a lot!

Did you look for the venues listed here at Hitched?

    Good luck!

Welcome to hitched! If you want something a little quirky you should also look into art spaces or small theatres, some hire out at reasonable prices and are very different to your standard wedding venues. Look into the London Sketch Club, The Arts Club, and The Nave. : )

    Hello and welcome to hitched.

Lovely sentiment behind your engagement ring. I cant give you any advice about central London weddings but you may find summer 2014 quite difficult to secure, my venue only had three dates (all Fridays) left between the end of April and September, but fingers crossed for you and keep us updated!!

Hello IGB2B, welcome to Hitched Smiley smile

I love that your using part of your nan's ring to make yours .. I hope the diamond does give you lots of luck.
I grew up in London (still not any help with venues though!).

I thought this may help if you plan to go down the Gastro pub route: http://www.etmgroup.co.uk/weddings/

    Some lovely venues there!

    Hi & welcome!

Your ring sounds like it will be lovely-love the sentiment.

There are a few London hitchers about, Funky as above, Clarehj and flowersinherhair and Sasasi I think. Might be worth you starting a new thread for London folks to share info in?

Yes lots of London hitchers/otters but not many actually are/got married in London.

Sasasi got hitched before I was a regular, Clares is the only one (other than my own) that I remember following all the way from planning through to report!

Is Flowers getting married in London? How did I not know this? (I know her engagement shoot was in London)

Ahhh another London bride! as Funky said there aren't enough of us and thanks Kjay

I got marrried in your exact area - One Great George street which in between St James Park and Parliament Square. We had a choice of either walking left to St James Park or right to Parliament Square for our photos but decided to be a bit different and walked through gthe crowded streets of London. Usually my idea of hell but an amazing feeling.

I can't say my venue was cheap, but was on par with basically any swanky SE England venue.

The gastropub might be a good idea and I'm not much help with venues, apart from my own, but I just want to say how amazing your photos will be.

There are a few of mine (I'm a serial flasher)

They are late ☹️ (supposed to be within 4<6 weeks) *should* have them next week which will be nearly 9 weeks post wedding.

Sorry OP for derailing your thread!
