Hello from a newbie

silverglitter, 3 January, 2013 at 20:55 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi everyone

I have just joined up as I recently got engaged, I was starting to think he would never ask but he did yay! I hope to get to know you all as I try to figure out what kind of wedding we will have and organise it while completing my degree. We are tentatively hoping to get married toward the end of 2014 but I have just realised the weather in Scotland will be horrendous so maybe that'll change.

This site seems huge, does anyone have any tips on where to start?

Hope I have posted this in the right place, I couldn't find an 'introduce yourself' section.

Hello, welcome and congratulations on your engagement!

I started by Setting out a budget, be realistic with what you will be able to afford/save. Next I would decide on your date or roughly when you are going to want get married as prices do vary a lot once you start researching your venue, which is what I would do next decide what kind of wedding you would like and start researching for your big day.

Hope that helps and happy planning!

Hello, congratulations and welcome to hitched!!

I agree with Gem. The big first three things (in this order): 1. Decide your budget 2. Figure out rough guest numbers 3. Find and book your venue. Then follow with booking all your other suppliers ASAP. 'The early bird catches the worm' is very applicable to booking up your suppliers, the best get snapped up quickly!

Best of luck and fire away if you have any questions about anything Smiley smile

    Hi,

Congratulations and welcome. You will find this forum gets quite addictive!

My top tip before starting is for you and your OH to write a list of your priorities for your wedding separately and then compare- this might help you decide what's important to you before looking at venues.

Once venue and church/ registrar is sorted you can then look at booking the things which are date dependant (photographer (known as TOG on here- took me ages to work that out), flowers, cars etc.

    Hope it helps

Hello to a fellow noob ?

I'm pretty new to all this myself (even though I've been engaged for about a year now), but what I have picked up on so far is that Photographers (especially the really good ones) get booked up incredibly fast, and the holy trinity of Date, Venue, Registrar is the foremost thing to get locked down.

We're only just starting the planning & everyone has different priorities, like, for us a good photographer is more important than the dress & we aren't that fussed about having 'wedding' cars. Once you know whats important to you, its easy to allocate a budget for each thing according to what you can afford and what's most important.

    Welcome!

I agree with above - to us, the photography is really important. But this will be totally different to every B2B Smiley smile

Hi silverglitter, congratulations on your engagement and welcome to hitched!

Venue and therefore date first Smiley smile Is it likely to snow in Scottish winter (that would be beautiful) or are you just likely to get drenched? To be honest it's really hard to time a wedding around rain without having to bustle into the one or two summer months we now have, where everything will get booked up and be more expensive. If you do go for autumn/winter 2014, as long as you have a rain contingency plan it can be totally fine! Big white bridal umbrella that matches your dress is a must!

    Hi and welcome silverglitter,

In the toolbar across the page, you'll see an area called 'Members'. In here you'll be able to find lots of tools to help you with your wedding planning. The To Do List tool is an excellent starting point - if you add your wedding date to 'My Wedding' (or the date you hope to have) it will adjust your list so all the timings are appropriate, and it'll give you a good idea of where to start!

    Good luck with your planning!

Thank you everyone for all the tips, they are really helpful. I think OH has been putting this off for a long time as he has quite definate ideas about having no guests and no party which is obviously not the dream wedding for most people, he is just anti-social so I'll definately be doing the list thing and get him to prioritise what he wants and try to figure out what my priorities are to see where we compromise.

Unfortunately it is not likely to snow, that would have been beautiful. It is just likely to rain a lot but it rains in the summer most days too, at the minute I don't think we've had a rain free day for about a month or longer.

I need to sort out a few financial things and then I can start to look at how much we can realisitcally save up and how long it will take to reach a number that will suit the wedding we want. The date is going to be an issue as well as I don't finish my degree until Sept 2014 and I only have a few weeks set holidays every year so we'd either need to arrange it around uni or wait until I qualify.

Why is nothing in life ever simple eh?

Thanks again for all your advice, I really appreciate it as my Mum and Sil are already driving me potty and I have only been engaged 4 days lol.
