Hello from Thailand...possibly here for longer than we thought! DEFINITELY STRANDED!

alison76, 26 November, 2008 at 12:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Hey all!

Just thought I'd say hello. We're meant to be flying home from thailand on Friday.....only it doesn't look like it will be happening right now. My brother is valiantly sending us embassy contacts but to be honest we're not flustered. We have insurance, cash and credit cards and are on an island in the andaman sea. There are worse places to be stuck!

And even better news is that my boss has contacted me and I have a contract for 2009 so the job search doesn't need to be as frenetic.

Hope everyone else is good.

Alison

UPDATE

Well...here we are in Ao Nang and should have been flying home right now. We have to fly Krabi - Bangkok and Bangkok - London.

Our insurance doesn't cover civil unrest so we have to pay for extra hotels ourselves.

It's an absolute mess. We were told last night we had flights booked for 30th Nov. Thai airways then called back and said the 30th was fully booked and we had flights for 1st Dec. We complained at that and so we were told we were confirmed for the 1st but to call back at 10am today and we might be able to get on the 30th.

We've just done that and have now been told no reservations have been changed as they still don't know what's happening with flights and we have to call back later. So we have no idea when we are coming home. My H is ready to kill someone as the people on the end of the phone are next to useless.

We've managed to book the hotel for an extra couple of nights until Sunday, at a cost of 88 quid, which isn't bad considering it's high season. We got a bit of a discount thru pity!

We just want to get home now. Our optimism the other day was mis-placed - the airlines are utterly disorganised. We thought they may fly us from Krabi to somewhere like Kualur Lumpur (spelling), which is a regular flight, and the London from there. But no....they're waiting to see what happens with the airport.

Argh!

Protestors have swarmed the airport and closed it - no flights in or out of bangkok for the indefinite future. They're trying to bring down the government.

Eek I hadn't heard about that. A little scary, it might not be that safe to be stuck there if there is violence though, so you probably should get in contact with the embassy just in case.

As long as the protests don't get nasty, it sounds like you're sitting pretty at the mo!

Great news on the job front, glad things are looking up for you.

Doing a reply as I forgot when I did my update this morning that it no longer bounces it. Looks like we're here until Monday at earliest.

Thanks Sophie! My H keeps stressing about extra cost but one thing that's happening in January is that we lose all benefits but get a 25% payrise, so I'm less worried about costs.

Still, cocktails are 1 pound a go out here so we've had a good night tonight. And the tan got topped up this afternoon. HOpefully we're going to get somewhere in the morning!

Oh no, that sucks. This holiday has been a bit jinxed, weren't you supposed to be going to Cuba when the hurricane hit? Hope you get out soon.

I'm assuming you've spoken to your insurance company? We had to cancel a hotel due to strikes (which were not supposed to be covered) but they paid out (though it wasn't a huge amount)

    Hope it gets sorted soon!

CountD - you're memory serves you well! And the weather hasn't been great for this one!

Jaz - we haven't spoken with them but it's listed under the general exclusions bit. Also spoke with the british embassy earlier and he said most people's insurance won't cover this. However, we can maybe get the hotel paid for by the tourism authority of thailand.

You might find you can claim for other things though. When I was a week late home after a hurricane, I couldn't claim for the cost of my ruined holiday but could claim under the flight delays part.

Thanks for that - will try once/if/when we get home!

Off to bed now - found a great bar with a very happy hour and strong cocktails. Need some sleep!

We had strikes under ours and they paid out without question though from memory it was for about £200 and 2 or 3 years ago. It was whatever insurance you could add on at easyjet.co.uk so I wasn't expecting much from it tbh but they came good with no hassle.
