HELP! BRIDESMAID DRESSES

Fruitbat, 20 August, 2012 at 10:55 Posted on Planning 0 12

I'm getting married in May 2014, I've found the perfect Bridesmaid dresses 1950's vintage swing dresses, only problem is they are end of line, so wont be in stock by the time of the Wedding, what do I do, decide it's fates way of telling me the dresses are not to be, or do I run the risk of ordering them now, getting them altered if necessary, or try selling them on and get new ones? Possibly even mismatch the styles, for those the dresses dont fit?

I need HELP!

What woud you do?

I'm getting married the same time and I'm dreading being in the same situation. I only have one BM and she's been the same size for years so I would feel fairly comfortable getting it now, but I would obviously hold off on any alterations unitl nearer the time.

Can't you take your BMs in now to make sure they have the right size for each of them? Unless someone puts on loads of weight or gets preggers, then you should be fine. If they are end of line, I would ask if they could do some sort of discount too. If you love them that much, I would say go for it.

I was in the same situation last month, as I am also a May 2014 bride! I found the perfect dresses for my BMs and found them on the 'last chance to buy' rail in River Island! I was gutted! I had my BMs with me at the time, so got them to try them on.

Luckily I checked online and they were still there, so I just went with my gut and got them. I might only have a problem with one of my BMs, as she is prone to yo-yoing with her weight (she tried on a 12 in the shop, which struggled to do up, but promised me she would be a 12 for the wedding). So I bought both dresses a size bigger than they need to be, and will get them altered nearer the time should they need to be.

I would get them if you're 100% certain you have to have these dresses.

50s swing dresses are quite popular - are you sure you won't find something else just as good?

As Cinnamon says - good idea to buy them a size bigger just in case then foot the alterations bill closer to the time.

    Can we see a picture?

I think this is getting to be a trend for us 2014 B2B's. I have also had the same issue, my daughter who is my chief bridesmaid had fallen in love with a dress being discontinued at the end of this month, she tried on loads but it was the one she kept going back too, so we have bitten the bullet and ordered them.

We will not get them altered until nearer the time and have checked that the designer isn't discontinuing the colour otherwise we would have ordered extra material incase it was needed, the seamstress at the shop has said if the girls gain/loose weight etc she will be able to replace the zip with a corset back and do other alterations as needed.

So I would say if you love them just go for it ?

    Hi Fruitbat

I have seen that dress on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-CLASSY-VINTAGE-1950s-ROCKABILLY-STYLE-RED-BOW-SWING-PARTY-EVENING-DRESS-/130629494922?pt=UK_Women_s_Dresses&var=&hash=item1e6a1fe88a

It's been on there for months. I know about it because I was going to wear it for my 30th birthday party but have gone with something else. Just a thought.

Oh that is a good price.

How many BMs do you have? Do you have one that consistently stays the same weight? Could you buy one in her size and have a look at the fit, quality etc?

You've also got to think about the possibility of pregnancies in the next two years.

I have four bridesmaids in total.

One who is determined to lose weight, but thats a good idea, I do have one who has been constistently the same size for years, thats a good idea tho' about ordering one to see whats it's like, ive already checked the returns policy :0)
