HELP - Civil Ceremony not where you live!

blueeyedgirl, 9 October, 2009 at 15:10 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi

Both me and my partner live in Manchester and we want to get married in Belfast where he is originally from and where most of his family still are - which suits me as I have a small family and we have found an ACE venue which is good value for money.

Anyhoo we want a civil ceremony at the venue, its licensed, but ive read that you have to live in that area to use a local registar for like 7 days before and 15 days after- PANIC! This will not work for us - does this mean we cannot get married in a civil ceremony accept where we live?!

Im sure other people have been married outside their area - please help !!

Thanks

S xx

I know it doesn't make any difference in England, for a civil ceremony but I'm not sure about the rest of the UK I'm afraid. It's the same internationally, different countries have different residence laws...

    Sorry, that wasn't much help!!

    Hiya,

Me and my partner live in Liverpool but are getting married up in Lake Windermere. We've been told that we have to give notice in Liverpool first, then send our 'notice' documents to the Registrar Office in Kendal for them to officially marry us up there. I'm not sure if this is the same for marrying in Northern Ireland, but it sounds like it may be a similar case?

You should get in touch with the Registrar Office in Belfast, and your local Registrar Office and I'm sure they'll be able to advise you accordingly, I don't see it being a problem to be honest!

    Best of luck ?

    Hi

We live in Reading (neither of us from there) and are getting married in Bristol (neither of us from here).

We have held out date with Bristol registrars but have to give notice at Reading. We're booked in next week (yeah!) to do this. I've been told that Reading will send Bristol our documents the same day and then Bristol will conifrm our booking. Then after 16 days we can collect our certificate/license from Reading.

One thing to note though is that once you secure your venue you should "book" the regsitar too as we didn't and had to change our wedding date :o( Bristol have said it's held until they see the documents. We've had a bit of a wait cos the earliest date Reading could see us wasn't for over 3 weeks!
