Help me choose a MUA please!

xMissyLoux, 25 April, 2012 at 21:23 Posted on Planning 0 19

ETA: Please can you offer me your opinions on my 5 possible MUAs, their pages are on one of my posts further down but I've actually found each one has made-over a 'bride' for the same wedding blog photoshoot and have the links. If you scroll to the bottom and look and the photos of the brides and let me know which one you think has the best make-up that would be great ?

1. Leah Stevens

2. Julie Wieczorek

3. Lee Maddocks

4. Charlotte Humphrey

5. Neila

O/P: Okay so this isn't my first post about wedding make-up! I've actually been trying to make a decision since November on my wedding make-up!

I'd been trying to decide if a) I could afford a MUA and b) if I wanted one or might as well do my own make-up.

Then I had a trial with Estee Lauder and thought about buying their products and doing it myself but then heard bad things about the foundation on camera and also wondered whether the great make-up might have been down to application techniques instead of or as well as the products themselves...which has left me with the conclusion get a MUA!

But I've still not been able to bite the bullet, so scared about making the wrong decision! At the moment I'm down to 5 possible MUA's and have no idea how I decide who is going to be best! I don't know anyone I can get recommendations from etc In an ideal world I'd love to have a trial with a 2 or 3 of them and see how I like the make-up but trials are almost as expensive as make-up on the day and I just can't afford to be throwing money away, only just got the budget to have the make-up done in the first place!

What should I do?

Do you not have any friends or family in the area who have had special occasion or wedding make up done by someone in particular? No one at work who has got married in the last year or two?

I asked two friends who have/are getting married recently and thats how i found my MUA.

Alternatively, where in the country are you? perhaps someone on here can give you recs.

This is what I'm afraid of Sparkly! I did find one lady I was quite confident about and then when I contacted her again she was booked!

I've found 4 in my area that are still available...

3 of which have done make-up for bridal photoshoots with a large local wedding blog www.chicbride.co.uk and the other one is a lady who has worked with my TOG before.

I literally have NO-ONE I can ask for a referral...I'm in Cornwall but don't think there are many of us Cornish brides around!

I definitely need to bite the bullet soon!

Have a look at their portfolio's and see which one you like best. Speak the the MUA and see which one you feel most comfortable and confident with. Ask which products they use, as you want someone that uses high end products and a range (as no one makeup brand is good for everything).

Then book with one and have a trial as soon as you can that way if you don't like what they do then you can find another MUA. Although at your trial the MUA should stay with you until your 100% happy with your look so make sure you tell her if your not.

I've heard good reports about changing faces. They cover Cornwall. Bells brides are also very good.

This is exactly what I was going to say - if you can meet them face to face, if you can';t atleast have a chat on the phone, see if you can see more of their work than just whats on their website - unless they have a massive gallery. GHave a trial with the one that you like the work of most and tat you feel you gel with.

I was almost at my wits end trying to decide - like you I had a few options but didn't know how to wittle it down further.

In desparation I posted on FB and some people who I hadn't even thought of asking offered recommendations - so maybe you have people in the know that you don't even know about!!

Sparkly - are you the lady in Sheffield wgho I recommended Polly J to? If so and she is booked I still have a list, I think, of other artists that I considered if that might help?

Thank you for all your advice!

I've seen examples of their work and they all look good, TBH I don't really know what I'm looking for, I like the look of my own make-up as it is, my biggest dilemma is having make-up that stays put for the majority of the day which is something I guess I won't know until I have a trial!

I can't really afford to have a trial with one MUA and then decide I dont like it and have a trial and book another...some trials are nearly the same price as make-up on the day could end up working out pricey to keep trying out different MUAs!

Thanks for the recommendations Pinkerbell, although these are Devon based MUAs and although they will cover Cornwall I suspect a travel charge would be incurred, so would rather have a Cornish MUA who will travel to me for free Smiley smile

I know one of the MUAs uses clinique and the MUA who works with my TOG has her own natural make-up range and I'm not sure if this a pro or a con??

These are the links to the 4 ladies I'm stuck between if anyone fancies a look at their pages and letting me know whether they think they'd have a preference or any fors of against either one!

I'm using Polly J too - just had my trial with her at the weekend and would confirm that she is fabulous Smiley smile Very understanding and flexible! I was really happy with my makeup and she did a great job despite my lack of ability to put into words what I wanted!!
