lovelygirl, 24 June, 2011 at 15:07 Posted on Planning 0 10

Right to those who know or wish to voice an opinion your advice would be greatly appreciated! If you click on the link you will see me in my dress - have no new picture i am afraid......

https://www.hitched.co.uk/Chat/forums/p/201534/1989317.aspx#1989317

The problem is my mum likes the length it is now which is carpet sweeping..... I want it shortened by about 2 to 4 inches... the dress has not been altered and I am only 5ft 2... she keeps saying it will look SILLY in the photos if i have it shortened....

Also if you have a dress with lace at the bottom like mine please flash me your pic when it was perfect ie after alterations if you needed them done.

It is the only thing she talks about re the dress.......

Help!

Have you got your shoes yet? when i was having my dress altereted (with the shoes on) the bottom of the dress needed to be skimming the floor so you couldn't see my shoes but so i wouldn't be tripping upin it when i was waking.

I don't know if thats any help with the length?

Your mum might think it looks silly, but that doesn't mean it will actually look silly - it just means she doesn't like the thought of it shorter. It's your dress, not hers. You're the one wearing it, not her. Therefore ultimately you decide whether to lop or not.

Having said that, I'm finding it hard to envisage 4" lopped off the bottom and how it will look. Were you wearing your wedding shoes in that photo? I suppose taking 4" off the bottom you'd be able to see your shoes but I'm not convinced it would be an improvement.

Is there any particular reason you want 4" chopped off? Dresses are normally floor sweeping, or a lot shorter like knee length, and if you wanted a knee length dress surely you'd have bought one in the first place?

My dress is a lacey one but some things to consider (that i had to):

    * you need to wait until it is altered to fit you (if thats needed etc) as with mine you couldnt tell the proper length until it was sitting correctly on my body.

    * are you wearing a hoop? If so, this will lift the length a bit as well - mine looked as though it needed the length altering by about 2 inches, but when i tried it on with a hoop and after the alterations to the rest of the dress had been done, the length of mine was spot on!

    * also, are you going to be on carpet at your venue? Carpet tends to make the dress 'drag' at the hemline - when i last tried mine on at the shop on a carpet area, it was doing this a tad, but on tiled/wooden floor it was completely fine.

Looking at your pic, assuming you are wearing your shoes you'll be wearing on the day, then i agree that it needs shortening... It is your dress, and you need to be comfortable in it and you dont want to be kicking out the front of your dress with every step you need to take - which is what will happen if a dress is too long!

I'm still no clearer why you'd want to take 4 inches off the middle then because surely where it fits around your waist - which looks fine to me - would all be in the wrong place?

Hi I agree with you.. I think the dress would look better if the lace edge just touches the floor... look to long to me but guess its personal choice. Lovely dress

Awww AJ .. The dress would be lifted up from the waist to make it shorter (not smaller) so the hem is still scalloped.

I'm getting to grips with pretty much every aspect of wedding planning, but having (naturally) been excluded from anything dress related it's not something I've picked up, and of course I don't have any "other experience" of dresses either.

I think you'd probably be quite worried if I had...

Just looked to me like it fitted properly on the waist and hips in the picture, that's all.

Aj - she isnt meaning that the 'fit' will be altered, but that as the lace edge at the bottom of the dress cant be shortened (as otherwise this would mean removing the lace essentially) that the length would be altered by 'lifting' the dress length at the waist part of the dress. This will mean the scalloped lace egde stays in tact whilst still shortening the length.

Well I tried it on last night and it fitted like a dream! just need to maintain my weight as it is! have told mum it is going shorter! Have shown my CBM and she agrees with me so now feel I have some back up... the annoying thing is that i am going to have to return home as she did not book the dress lady and she is busy......
