Help needed for a vow renewal reading

manicb2b, 23 July, 2012 at 23:02 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi I hope you can help. My sister is renewing her vows very soon (not in a church) and I have been asked to do a reading. Does anyone know of anything suitable. A lot of the ones I have found talk about the bride and groom, or the wedding day and I don't think they are suitable. Also my BiL is very ill but I would like it to be up beat, but finding something suitable is tricky. Any suggestions gratefully received x

I had this, which doesn't mention weddings/bride/groom and is also very "in the moment" rather than dwelling on the future:

    Scaffolding by Seamus Heaney.

Masons, when they start upon a building,
    Are careful to test out the scaffolding;

Make sure that planks won’t slip at busy points,
Secure all ladders, tighten bolted joints.

And yet all this comes down when the job’s done
Showing off walls of sure and solid stone.

So if, my dear, there sometimes seem to be
Old bridges breaking between you and me

Never fear. We may let the scaffolds fall
Confident that we have built our wall.

We considered the Seamus Heaney one. I love it.

We had this. Not sure if the 'never part' bit mightn't be right though?

    Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.

Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of eternal passion.
That is just being “in love” which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.

Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground,
and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, they find that
they are one tree and not two.
