Help needed re;water filled centrepieces

Selenalee69, 6 September, 2012 at 15:53 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hello all, I am thinking of doing my own centrepieces and I like the idea of glass cylinders or cubes with pebbles or the pearls & light inside, a single artificial orchid head and a candle floating on the top. Will silk flowers sit nicely in water or will the petals stick together? Would I be better off using fresh flowers or perhaps a whole stem and forget the candle? If anyone has made these, your tips or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks !

You might find the colour in silk flowers will run in water - I think you can get water fast ones but I've not looked for any.

Fresh flowers are probably better however, all flowers will float.

Best bet is a stem which you will probably need to wire and weight down to prevent it from floating.

The other thing with artificial flowers is that the water will magnify everything so if the edges of the flowers are frayed it will be very noticeable.

Also if you use pebbles/stones make sure you wash/rinse them all before the big day. When I was working in a hotel a bride did her own flowers with water and pebbles and I dont think cloudy/dirty water was the look she was aiming for.

Generally silk flowers are not really silk they are polyester or some such. I have a couple of decoration that have flowers completely submerged under water and floating candles on top, the flowers generally hold their shape . I tie them with fishing line and attach that to the bottom of the vase to keep them under water

Thanks for your replies everyone ! I did really want fresh but am not going to be around before the reception as we are marrying abroad and only have 2 days after we get back until the day.

I thought if I used artificial,I could get them prepared in advance and just assemble them on the day. I wanted magenta singapore orchids because that's what the flowers are in our overseas package, but I don't suppose it really matters..
