Help!! Offended family with pope comment on FB...what to do?

rebecca2286, 17 September, 2010 at 22:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I made a comment on FB about not being impressed at being called an nazi by the pope (he linked atheism to nazism).

This sparked a massive discussion amongst my friends, the majority of whom are all atheist and has resulted in such comments as "in their time the catholic church has done worse things than the nazis". They were talking historically here, the crusades, spanish inquisition etc etc.

But now members of my family have become involved. All of my family, except me are christian, CofE, not catholic, but they have taken offence at things that have been said and I dont know what to do!! I dont disagree with the things said on FB but I dont want people upset. Especially since the worst comment in the eyes of the family member concerned was made by my OH.

HELP!! SHould I make OH apologise, should I just take down the post and say it got out of hand and sorry for any offence? SHould I leave it? Aghh!!

My concern is it will get back to my grandad who is devoutly christian and the last thing I want to do is offend him!

Personally I wouldn't have said something like the catholic church has done worse things the nazis because I don't believe they have. You can't compare morally reprehensive things and say this is an 8.5 or a 9 on the bad scale. Bad things have been done in the names of various groups at various times in history.

I also think people should either be willing to stand by what they have written/said or shouldn't say it. If your OH made that comment it is his decision to stand by it or apologise not yours to do it for him.

I would probably just delete the post, it'll blow over, they may be offended but it won't kill them and your OH is entitled to his opinion whether or not they agree.

This is why other than general moans about traffic I've not mentioned the Pope much in my status - H's family are all Catholic and they'd have taken the hump! ?

It's things like this that make me stay away from FB.

Whatever you think or feel about a subject, do you really want all the world to see it and then pass judgement on you ?

I think you might be better taking down the post and trying to explain yourself to your family.

    I'd just delete the post.

Being a stubborn mare, I'd just leave it and definitely wouldn't apologise for an opinion.
