Help please! Glitter nail varnish...

OB, 25 June, 2013 at 12:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

Mini this is your fault!!

I saw some Barry M glitter nail varnish the other day, but wasn't brave enough to buy it. It was really chunky pieces of glitter ifkwim? Anyway, yesterday I was in boots and picked up a much more subtle glitter varnish, it's blue and purple and just little bits of glitter.

So I've done one nail, 2 coats, and to me it just doesn't seem thick enough. I can still see nail underneath. Am I right in thinking it shouldn't be like that? So what do I do? More coats? A base colour underneath? Please help! I'm crap at stuff like this.

Pics if they help...

Thumb now (with 2 coats)

Similar colours I have (see top pic, stupid phone)

You need to do a coat underneath so the nail doesn't show through. Similar colour for a block effect, or a different one will give it a contrasting look.

It's a PITA to remove also - so good luck with that one ?

Oh dear! I didn't know that!

Ok so I have thumb with 4 coats on now, first finger is purple with glitter, 2nd finger is blue with glitter. Which is best?

I find normal nail varnish rules don't apply with glitter varnish, literally 'blob' it on! (Sounds horrible!)

Good luck removing it, if anyone has any tips then they would be gratefully received, its awful!

OB, you need to get this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nails-Inc-Bling-Rocks-Collection/dp/B009QXLNC6/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1372162414&sr=8-12&keywords=nails+inc

I have it and it's bloody awesome. It's literally a pot of glitter that you put on your nails. It makes them so ridiculously sparkly!!

Expensive, I know, but so worth it.

    Purple with glitter

Be brave and get the barry M one. I have a red glitter that I can use alone, 2 coats and done.

Ali - Why oh why did you post that!?!?! Now I NEED it.

Holey - this should help Smiley smile http://sonailicious.com/remove-glitter-polish-quickly/

OB, I think if you're trying to get it to look how it does in the bottle, putting purple under is best cause the glitter itself is more purple than blue Smiley smile Still looks good with blue under though!

It may be expensive, but you only use a teeny bit of the glitter. And, because it's pure glitter, it doesn't go all clumpy like nail polishes do. Therefore, it's actually SAVING you money, because you don't have to replace it every 6 months or so.

I was going to suggest the purple as a base coat but the blue looks nice too! i guess you can have it different for different occasions!

Would defo go for the coloured base coat rather than lots of layers!

Agree with ATB too about removing it. Glitter and cotton wool pads are not friends!

    Thanks everyone.

So I went with purple. A bit rough round the edges (I'm crap at it) but I'm quite pleased. Just got to tidy them up once they're dry.

Ali I daren't even look! I'm too poor!

    FF they look lovely!

If you make a little pot of UVA glue (is that right?) and use that as base coat you can just peel the glitter off when you want. Otherwise I have found even the specialist stuff is a right ballache to get off.

I love Nails Inc but is the bling it on glitter/rocks/feathers/flowers etc really messy to do? It loks complicated!

Ob's nails are lovely and long. I've worn acrylics for the last five years so although they look ok they are really crap close up and bend at the slightest touch Smiley sad

I use one that needs about four coats but not an undercoat. I have a silvery one that i just put a little on and you still see your nail and i have a few barry m ones which are good. I got one from claires accessories as a present and it is amazing!

I've always had really strong decent nails. Shame I rarely bother with them! I just let them grow until one chips then I chew them all off! Ha ha.

I swear they are already stronger though. This happened last time. They could near enough cut glass without chipping!

Me too. I have tried OPI quick dry, Nails Inc caviar, Sally Henson etc etc, never found one that actually works beyond 2 days. I don't really use my nails that much either! The best is the Nails Inc Matt one but if you want glossy then try the Gel Effect one. Pricey though.
