Help - pub licence!

grooveechyk, 31 January, 2014 at 18:21 Posted on Planning 0 5

Hi, I have my heart set on my local country pub venue. We have identified a suitable date (to fit in with teachers in the family). Matched it with the church, done the sums, and cut the guests to fit with their maximum all because we love it. And most people we know think it is our perfect venue. We went in for a final chat before we go to the church on Tuesday and here is the problem. They told us under 16s have to leave by 10pm. We have a few small children coming and this does not present a problem. However I have brothers who will be 14 and 15 by the time of the wedding in 16 months time. This seems to be a condition on their licence. I have discussed with my stepdad about the condition and it went down like a lead balloon. The thing is they normally spend most parties glued to their game boys and get fed up. I will be devastated if we change venues and they do the same. I haven't actually told them yet as I would love to find a way round it - does anyone know whether you can apply to alter the conditions? If they did leave by 10pm our house is 5 mins away and we would set it up with pizzas, play station etc?

i need some ideas as I am currently heartbroken by the idea of having it elsewhere!

thanks

They could apply for a temporary event notice that may allow them to alter the licensing conditions for a one off event although they are limited to how many of those they can apply for throughout the year. many premises may use their quota for special events e.g Xmas, nye, bank holidays etc.

    More info via the link

There is likely to be fees which they may ask you to cover (if they agree to apply)

Thanks. I have emailed the pub tonight (they are usually busy Fridays - Ill be going in later I imagine!) and clearly Council is closed. I am more than happy to pay for the tens. I guess I haven't had chance yet but just been spending the evening in tears!!

If they don't change your license I think you should go ahead with it anyway. If you were really far away and had nowhere your brothers could go then it would be different but they'll have a great time with pizzas and computer games. Get your brothers on side and get them to tell your step dad they don't mind/ are happy. It's your wedding not his! If it was for the whole event they couldn't come then I could understand the issue but it's only a couple of hours.

How is the pub going to know they are under 16? Surely a 14,15 yo can pass for 16, I v much doubt they will be checking.

I'd say stick with the venue and take the risk, I'm sure you'll be fine. Us adults find it pretty hard to guess teenagers ages, even harder when they're dressed in suits and acting mature. I don't think the staff would spot them as long as theres only 2 of them, especially as they're pretty close to 16 and the staff will be rushed off their feet! If they were a bit younger it'd be more of a risk. They'll both love being 17 for the day!

Maybe prep the playstations and pizzas just incase, I really don't think you'll have a problem. It's not like they'll have bouncers ID'ing people etc. Nothing to lose, 10pm is quite far into the evening if they did get spotted (worse case scenario!). Loads of us used to get served for alcohol aged 16, no problem - and that's far more scrutinised!
