Help! Something a bit different....

weddingworrier, 22 October, 2009 at 14:07 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hello everyone! I was just after some advice - I am due to get married next September, which seems like a long way away, but am getting very worried that I will never find what I want for a reception! We are getting married in Cornwall and have the church sorted out, but the reception venue is giving me a complete headache! I don't neccessarily want to go down the traditional hotel route, so was thinking maybe a village hall + marquee and caterers? Does anyone have any experience of doing anything like this?

I'd be grateful for any advice ?

I know someone who did this in cornwall this year and it was fab! No recommendations though Im afraid.

Am actually sort of doing this ourselves, although we own the building, but have a mix of caterers and DIY...

Marquees are something we looked at, but be warned - they are not exactly the cheap option...but a village hall certainly can be...

Will be around sporadically if you have any questions, but am off for now for the drive back to the UK

Thanks for getting in touch, would love to hear a bit more about the wedding you went to in Cornwall, and how you are doing your own!

    Hi,

We're getting married in Surrey but we've hired a farm house where all our family are staying (and us) and it has an indoor swimming pool which they cover over with a solid floor and we're having our reception in there and hiring people in. Really lucky coz the people who run it also have a catering buisness and will also hire in all the equipment and stuff for us.

It is a bit more difficult than a conventional hotel wedding as you're trying to get lots of different people working together but it's easier to get the day you really want and not the package you have to have...

Also, it's not necesaryily less expensive because Marquees and hiring in everything (including loos, coat rails, knives, forks etc) can really add up.

    But it's all good fun!

    Hi WW

Where abouts in Cornwall are you? I got married in Cornwall in May. Did the hotel thing but it wasn't overly traditional and was a beautiful location overlooking the sea.

I'm sure there are plenty of school/village halls available it depends on your locations. It also depends on your budget as although the hall might not be expensive to hire the marquee and caterers might be.

Depending on where you are in Cornwall, we have some friends who got married in Polhawn Fort....it was fab and pretty different! Have a look at https://polhawnfort.com/

Ive also heard of couples getting married at Polhawn Fort, its meant to be really nice.

Think you just hire the place out and do what you want with it? I remember someone saying they took all their own booze - ideal, but had to carry it down a steep spiral staircase - not ideal!

Thanks for the advice all - I've had a quick look at Polhawn Fort - it looks fab but I suspect a bit out of our price range!

MrsCroft2b - we are getting married in Lanhydrock near Bodmin, so fairly central. I would absolutely love to have our reception by the sea so any recommendations would be gratefully received!

We are going to look at a couple of village halls tomorrow in Lostwithiel & Lerryn but I'm just worried that it won't be special enough?

bridgetvictoria - where did you find out about the farm house you are having yours in?

    Hello ?,

I know this area quite well as I used to live in St.Austell. Lerryn is lovely and I also would recommend looking for a venue in Fowey or Golant- they are both around 15 mins from Lanydrock

    Hi again

We got married at the Carbis Bay Hotel which was stunning. We were also really lucky with the weather and so had some amazing pics on the beach (which the hotel own) and gorgeous views across the bay. It's a lil further down the line from Bodmin. I'm from Penzance (but currently live in Exeter) so I went there from home in the morning.

Food was great, reasonable prices and as we only had 30 at the wedding we got married in the extension to the conservatory with the doors open outwards looking over the sea.

Ahhh was an amazin day... ?

    Hi December1984! ?

Thanks so much to everyone for their advice! Just to let you know that we went to look around a village hall this morning and it was great! It's perfect for us so we've booked it and we are very very happy and excited about it! I know it will probably get to be more work than we possibly imagine right now, but we love the idea of having complete freedom to have everything the way we want them to be! The church is all confirmed as well so next move is booking a photographer, then I get to the bit I absolutely can't wait for - picking my dress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!
