Help us find a new surname

Hoofbeat, 19 December, 2013 at 16:11 Posted on Planning 0 22

My H2B and I are considering creating a new blended surname as neither of us are keen to take the other's surname and would feel happier taking an entirely new surname made up of letters from our surname.

The letters available are (in alphabetical order) are: abcehklloorrs

Ideally I'd like the surname to start with an S, but am open to any suggestions. We've tried putting the letters in an angram sorter, but would like some more original suggestions rather than just dictionary words that exist.

Any hitchers feeling creative and want to suggest some surnames?

Friends of mine took half of each of their mothers maiden names and created a new name that way.

Just some of the letters; definitely not all! H2B currently has a short surname and he would like to have a nice succinct surname. We would also like something that sounds quite nice and sophisticated (i.e., not too chavvy and nothing which any jokes could be made out of, e.g. one of our friends suggested bellocks but we could see that could potentially lead to bullying for any future children!)

Personally, I would like to avoid anything that sounds like "elo" as it just sounds wrong with my first name!

I already have my mothers maiden name, so that just wouldn't work for us.

I have a few friends who have changed names for personal reasons (like family issues) I always suggest trying celebrity surnames or (as morbid as it sounds) looking around grave yards for names

you have a good collection of letters so it could be possible to find lots of good name, you could see if any here feel right:

I went to school with a lovely girl and knew some of her siblings, all of whom were lovely (and rather well to do! haha) by the name of 'Hocklers' and it's a name which always conjures up lovely, polite people to me. So I rather like that you can make:

    'Hocklors'

    with your letters.

Though really and truly it's, so, so personal we can suggest anything and everything, but eventually you'll come up with together which just feels right.

Best of luck to you- it sounds lovely and really exciting!

Oh yeah - so if Hoofbeat's OH changed it slightly before, only one of them would need to by deed poll!

You can have (pretty much) anything you want & it'll be legal.

I think you should get creative like Phoebe and Mike in Friends....

Hmm, Bampax. I don't think that would have worked for us. Sounds like a new tampon brand.

    Scholar?

I have a friend who did not legally get married to her partner as he didn't believe in it, just had a humanist ceremony and made up a new name (based on the town where they had the ceremony) which they legally changed to afterwards. There were a few 'Princess Consuela Bananahammock' jokes made but now I think that the outside world (those of us not there for the ceremony, when they announced their new name) think they are legally married and seem to have accepted the new name and status quo without any problems.

There are loads of options, the easiest thing is to put the letters in here: http://www.scrabblecheat.com/

A few I saw which are interesting: Sherlock, Rockrose, Colorable and Solar. I think I like Rockrose, just stood out for me.

    Good Luck

    xx
