Help - vasectomy advice needed

Diamond Star Halo, 11 November, 2008 at 16:07 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Just got a letter with a date for H's vasectomy.... it's this Friday, so they're not giving us much notice really.

Months ago, when we got the consent form through to sign, they sent some info with advice about before and after the procedure, and I'm panicking slightly because I can't find it, and it's too long ago for me to remember all the details. H is in the US, and doesn't get back till tomorrow, and I'm not sure he even read the advice properly anyway.

Anyone have any advice about before and after? I'm hoping I'm going to find the letter, but I've looked in all the obvious places and can't find it yet. Freaking out slightly!

I would try NHS Direct - type vasectomy into their search engine and see what comes up.

From what I can remember, the advice my H had about it was to do with what to wear before and afterwards and what he could physically do before and after and what to expect for the actual procedure. But I can't remember the actual details because it was about three years or so ago now. And he had complications the poor chappie so the less I tell you about that, the better! ?

It was all very straight forward for my H. He went in and was in and out within an hour. I waited there and drove him home. He said it was no worse than having a tooth extracted/filling. He came home and was told to take it easy for a few days, so no heavy lifting etc. H was fine the next day, slighty sore and but didn't need to take any painkillers.

I do know of people having issues but most of those have been people that overdid it afterwards. One friend went out on a drinking binge that evening and ended up not being able to move off his bar stool and had to be taken to hospital. I had no sympathy at all ?

I believe he also has to shave below the navel - and the reason vasectomies tend to be on Fridays/Saturdays is to allow time to recover: apparently the patient shouldn't take long car/train/plane journeys because he'll be shifting around uncomfortably.

But I haven't had it done myself, so I don't have any first-hand experience - I've just made enquiries.

If you haven't given it loads of thought, that would be my main concern. Mista J and I both had to have a 'counselling' session with the Dr. It didn't take long to convince him? . Otherwise, if you are certain, then it is very straight foward. Snug pants and the day off work are required. If he gets given intravenous valium he'll be a little bit away with the fairies for a short while, but I am assured that it is very nice (till it wears off). Oh and the shaving bit is correct too.

Mr A had to shave his bags and have tight pants at the ready.

He had a <big gay> general anaesthetic and wasn't allowed to eat after midnight the previous evening.

Then he had to deliver a sample to the lab after "24 ejaculations". They were very specific.

Hi - my H had the "snip" almost a year ago. As others have said, he had to wear tight pants and take it easy for a few days. Didn't need pain killers. Procedure took about 20 minutes. He didn't need to shave.

    HTH!

Thanks so much all. I had completely forgotten the bit about shaving - might be quite amusing actually.

Re snug pants - how snug do they need to be? H tends to wear this sort of thing

Is that snug enough, or does he need briefs? [snigger]

I have this strange feeling there was something to do with abstinence on the advice letter, but I might have made that up.

Missus Jolly we are very certain. Lots of thought has gone into this. We definitely don't want more children, and I have been through hell with contraception of various kinds. A few months ago I was posting on here in despair because he wouldn't even go and see the GP about it (he was too scared). so this is a big step, but a good one.

They need to support his balls. OH wore briefs as his normal baggy boxers were no good and he was in a lot of pain when he tried wearing them
