Help with cat naming? DONE!

Ellena, 8 March, 2009 at 09:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

We went to a rescue shelter yesterday "just for a look, we're not getting anything". Then we saw this lovely cat and had to go back for her ?

She looks nice and relaxed but she's actually petrified. She'd been sat in the box for about 3 hours when this was taken, still hadn't come out. She's about 18months old and was found in a shed with her 4 kittens. The shed's owner fed them but didn't try to get close to them. 9 months later, he's off abroad so brought them to the shelter. She is incredibly nervous, bless her. The shelter were very grateful for us taking her as people aren't keen on timid cats apparently (I can see why if you had children)
We've got to restrict her to 1 room for a good while and keep going in and talking to her. This morning I thought we'd lost her-I looked everywhere then she frightened me to death by appearing in a drawer-god knows how she got in there!
Anyway, she needs a name. She's very petite. I like Rowen, but H thinks that sounds like Rowan, a boy's name. He likes Loxy, but I think that sounds like someone from a late nigh chat and date line-lol! Shona is another possible.
It's got to be short and I like the idea of something irish/gaelic/celtic, but throw in your suggestions ?

Thanks for all the suggestions ? In the end, I stuck with the tree theme and chose Willow. Nice and delicate which will suit her I think. And she's eaten today which has made me feel a lot better-mackeral, gets them every time!

Retro cat names surely to be back in fashion soon:

    My vote: Fluffy or Tabby.

For dogs: Rex, Fido, Rover, Spike, Spot all due to make a comeback soon.

She's very pretty - we have 2 boys, Zak and George - though Zak was originally Molly when we thought he was a girl

Ah she`s lovely-I`m sure she`ll soon settle in. Our cat is called Stella-but we found out she is actually a he so we were going to rename him steven but he didnt respond to that, so he`s still stella.

Our little black Charlie is appropriately named now (he is a right Charlie, as my dad says!) but when we thought he was a girl he was Cleo.

She looks lovely. How about Amber....as she has amber coloured fur....with white?

Also, she may be nervous now but she looks totally chilled in that box so I'm sure she'll get used to you all and calm down fairly soon.

I always think Rowan sounds more like a girly name to be honest and I like it for a cat. My mum has a cat called Maisie, and has also had a cat called Polly who was very petite and pretty if that helps. (Maisie is NOT petite, she's a big fat cat!).

That cat is beautiful, ours was very nervous and it's taken a long time for him to improve. He was fine with us after about 6 months (although still jumps if we're carrying the washing basket or bang a door), and is getting better with visitors all the time and will often let them stroke him after they've been there a while - we've had him 3.5 years now. My mum's cat is also nervous and it has taken her a while but she's a much more relaxed cat now. Don't feel disheartened if it takes a while, she will get there in the end.

Thanks for the suggestions ? I'll show them to H.
Amber is out though-we got this cat to replace Amber who was run over ☹️
(Don't worry, I'm not upset/offended, you hadn't read the thread, but you clearly have great taste in cat names!)

She's beautiful! Our female cat is Chloe. Our male cat, Oscar, is a rescue cat and he was so scared he would spray us every time he was picked up. You'd never know it now- he's still shy with strangers but he's a lovely affectionate cat who enjoys human contact. Just shows what a bit of human kindness can achieve!

Ah, she's lovely. She definitely looks like she should be called something that you might call a slightly elderly aunt. Something quiet, safe and cuddly. Martha? Lucy?

Off on a tangent, but I'm now worried that we've just called our baby a cat's name! (Amber)

    Ahhh she's very pretty.

Our girl cat is called Fenella which I love, found the name by looking through dvd covers and came to Carry on Screaming with Fenella Fielding then remembered the newsreader Fenella Fudge and that was that.

How about Kira, Bella? She deserves a pretty name.

Bonnie means 'pretty girl', according to a site showing Gaelic names and their origins, and Eithne means 'Little Fire'.

I'm sorry about Amber....it's really strange but when I saw the picture it was the first name that popped into my head. Perhaps it wasn't your cat that I got the vibes off but your username....spooky! ?

She's beautiful, I'm sure she'll settle in soon. I like all the names you've chosen although I'm with you on Loxy. She looks a bit like a Lucy (as already suggested I think).

We have a George and a Florence.

I like Maisie (she reminds me a little of the Maisie goes to Morningside books: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maisie-Comes-Morningside-Aileen-Paterson/dp/1871705002)

Lexie? My sister's cat was called lexie. Flora? Thistle?

    She is a beauty.

I had a Winnie and Flora, and previously have had Daisy and Sasha.

How about Orla, a very elegant name.

I also like the name Mackie, which is my mum's friend cat, but she is a bit loopy and it really suits her.

Other names I like: Lexi, Florence, Lily, Rosie, Leila or Hattie?
