Help with Dessert Menu

soon-to-be-Mrs-King, 21 August, 2011 at 10:31 Posted on Planning 0 30

Hi everyone

I went to see the chef last week to finalise the wedding menu, we have managed to sort out the starters, mains & sides but I couldn't make a decision on the desserts, so was hoping to get some opinions from you lovely brides and grooms.

Our wedding is 30th June 2012 and we have 120 people coming so I would like the options to appeal to the majority of guests. Also we will not be having children at the wedding only adults. We are allowed to decide our own desserts but we are only allowed 2 options. So far I have had the following suggestions from the chef and bridal party.

  • Warm Chocolate Torte
  • Bowl of melons and strawberries
  • Mango cheesecake
  • Apple crumble
  • Summer pudding
  • Strawberry cheesecake
  • Eat & Mess (or it's correct name Eton Mess)

Which 2 (if any) would you choose for your guests?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks x

    1. It's Eton Mess, rather than Eat and Mess. Unless you were making a joke, in which case, sorry. 2. Eton Mess is lush. 3. Apple crumble...mmm.

You know there will always be someone who asks can't they 'just have ice cream?' or a diabetic who asks for cheese? Sorry, work in a hotel and there's always one - even in my wedding party of 34.

Personally I'd go for Eton Mess because it's quite light and very tasty and probably the chocolatey one. It's a tough one though!

I would struggle to choose from this list it is all good.

I hate chocolate so am biased and rule that torte out. As it is a summer wedding melon and strawberries would be refreshing and light and mango cheesecake or Eton Mess would be yummy too.

I find crumble a bit heavy at the end of a 3 course meal so tend to go for light desserts.

@ Caweena, good point, but I think we have that covered...the menu will be going out with the invitations so we will be asking people if they have any special dietry requirements, that way the chef will know in advance. There will also be ice cream available on the day just incase somebody wants that.

I love mangos and I love cheesecake so it would be- mango cheesecake for me. And then as a second choice I would go for the warm chocolate torte. What a good selection of deserts you have x

Are you sure on the ice cream? I would check that the chef is definitely not including that in your two desserts. Not being picky but I know our chefs start going mad when we get the inevitable ice cream request - it's not even like it's a problem for them to do but they're just grumpy awkward SOBs!

Yep definitely sure about the ice cream...we originally wanted 3 dessert choices with ice cream being one of them but when we realised that we could only have 2 choices, the chef said that he would have ice cream available if anybody did request it on the day but don't send it out as an option.

I want Eton Mess for my wedding desert so i'm bias.

But i think the strawbeery cheesecake or apple crumble would be just as good for adults.

I think there are 2 types of people- choc pudding people and fruity pudding people.

I would therefore go for Eton Mess and the Choc Torte

    (am very very hungry now)

Looks like Eton Mess is coming out tops, followed closely by either Chocolate Torte or a cheesecake.

i'll take these suggestions back to OH and see what he thinks.

I would go for one choc and one fruit. This combo also allowes for one warm, one cold. And one heavy and one light. Those would be my criteria.

Eton Mess or Chocolate Torte. Something fruity/creamy or rich and chocolatey is a fair choice.

I get looked at like I am an alien when presented with chocolate and I say I Can't stand it any form, however I will offer my wedding guests a chocolate option. I am going to ask for a mini trio of desserts for everybody.

Strawberry cheesecake and chocolate torte get my vote. Eton Mess is very easy to make at home, apple crumble doesn't say early summer to me and mango is a love or hate fruit IMO.

I talked it over with OH and he likes the Chocolate Torte but he's not sure on the Eton Mess, so the strawberry cheesecake might be second choice. I have never made Eton Mess at home before and OH has never tasted it so I might make it and let him try and see if I can sway him.

With my family we would need to have the strawberries and melons as a choice as we sadly have a few diabetics in the family.

Eton Mess (sometimes wrongly called Eat a Mess), never heard it called eat & Mess, is tasty, but looks awful, there is no chicness to it.

Same with Apple Crumble, I love it, its one of my favourites, but does it have weddingy chic? I'd say no.

Personally I'd go for either cheesecake or the torte.

Well as they are all fruity options except for the chocolate torte, I would have the chocolate torte and the Eton Mess.

I think that depends on the presentation of the chef; if the Eton Mess is in a nice glass, or a small mount delicately drizzled with some of the fruit purree and topped with strawberry pieces and maybe a sprig of mint, it can look really good especially with the colours.

I do agree with apple crumble; colour wise it's hardly a delight for the eyes but I do love it! As someone else said what about pavlova? You could have mini ones!

It might be worth having something that avoids dairy in it - decided to ask for food allergies in save the dates and so far, I've managed to accumulate 1 vegan, 1 egg allergy, 2 lactose intolerances, 1 gluten intolerance and 2 alcohol intolerances. Even though I knew about some of these in advance the vegan will need a different starter (the non-fish option is cheese) and can join the egg and lactose free desserts and cakes.

If I was giving options, I'd let people choose from a chocolate and a fruit dessert, so would lean towards the chocolate and the melon and strawberry thingy

Thanks for all your suggestions. The chef has now said that we can have 3 choices so I think we have decided on the Chocolate Torte, Mango Cheesecake and Eton Mess.

We will be sending the menu out with the invitations and on the rsvp people will be able to advise if they have any special dietry requirements so that the chef can make them something seperate if needed.
