Help with DIY project

RomanticEmeralds, 28 August, 2015 at 09:21 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi everyone, hoping someone can help with this. I would like to do a thumbprint tree alongside our guest book (goes nicely with our woodland theme). I've looked online at various different ones to buy but many of the reviews suggest that they wished they had just made their own. I've found a nice template on line which can be printed out A3 size but I really wanted one on canvas. Does anyone have an idea how I could copy/transfer this image onto a blank canvas? I'm not very artistic so don't think I'd be able to simply draw it on by hand. I've been racking my brains but not really sure how to go about this. The only thing I could think of would be to draw on top of the image in pencil, lay it face down on to the canvas and draw over it again (on the back) thus hopefully leaving a faint pencil outline on the canvas to go over in pen. I remember doing this on paper when I was a child but not sure if it will work on canvas, plus I think it will be quite fiddly and time consuming. Any alternative ideas will be greatly received!

I'm completely useless at DIY of any sort. The only idea I can vaguely come up with is to use a sort of carbon paper in some way.

Hey, I 'think' you can go into somewhere like snappy snaps with your template and they'll do it for you. Most art/craft type places I am sure could help, maybe try hobbycraft?

I have seen a few of these at weddings but im just wondering how well peoples fingerprints will transfer / show up on to the canvas, have you seen one or do you have a piece of canvas to test some prints on before you go any further with drawing the tree.

You can get a completely free, customisable one from weddingchicks.com - look under their 'free printables' or 'DIY/projects' tabs to find it. I loved it (the site is REALLY good for DIY wedding bits) and we got it in our colour scheme ? found A3 card (300 gsm and above is best) from The Works - 5 sheets for around £4, got permission to print it at work and it was done!

You could always print it off this way and then take it to a printing/photo shop like snappy snaps etc and ask them to transfer it in the same way that they would with a photo.

    Here's my example:

I might be being really thick here - apologies if I am! - but could you not just print it, cut it out and then draw round it onto your canvas?

    Hi there,

I'm a designer so could help you with this! Smiley smile You can get things printed onto canvas here: https://www.photobox.co.uk/shop/wall-decor/canvas-prints-2

And I could help create a print ready file for you to upload. When is your wedding? Smiley smile If you need a custom design, let me know. I'm going to be designing one for my wedding too!

    Kay

I did consider this but the branches are so detailed I think it would be very difficult to do (a bit like the image in the earlier post)

Wow Kay that sounds fab! We get married at the end of December. I'd actually love a personalised one e.g with our names/ date on. I did see a nice example of one with the couple's initials 'carved' inside a heart on the tree trunk too. When are you planning to design yours?

I don't mind! I would like to get all my stationery done soonish but could tackle the tree first, should be one of the easier ones to do Smiley smile Just an idea with the ink too, I bought some of these from Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00161OQ0M - It's chalk ink so should work on most things, and can actually be cleaned off too (which could be annoying!). I'm using mine on paper, but it says on the listing that chalk ink works on leather, wood, and loads of other materials too, so might work on canvas? Could be worth ordering one and testing it when the canvas comes through? If you haven't got ink already!

With regards to the design, I'm tempted to go for something like this - https://www.notonthehighstreet.com/newforestprint/product/birch-wedding-fingerprint-tree - it has a heart hanging on the tree with the initials, what do you think? Could always do one with the initials actually carved into the tree if you prefer though! Let me know if you have any other examples you'd like me to use. I'd try and get it done by end of Sept/beginning of Oct if that works for you?

That would totally amazing, thank you much for the kind offer! I really like that example as well, I'm either way with the initials being 'carved' or hung on the tree both are good. I notice that there are two 'love birds' on one of the branches, would there be any possibility of changing them to owls? (I have a life long love of owls and our house is full of owly objects). I am having 110+ guests so need one with plenty of branches. Oooo I'm super excited now, thanks again. I was actually considering the exact same ink, my mum makes cards as a bit of a hobby and that is the ink she uses. I was planning to buy a small cheap canvas from the works and have a play about to see what colours work well together and how it looks on canvas.
