Help with photographer in Cornwall pls!!

big_red, 20 September, 2012 at 10:45 Posted on Planning 0 8

Hi all, I'm Ruth and getting wed next year (finally!!!)

Anyway I am desperately trying to find a good photographer in Cornwall. I have nearly worn google out! I am looking for personal experiences if possible not site reviews. We LOVE Christian Michael but they are out of budget, sadly. Kirstin Prisk is also good but expensive. We are looking for a grand or less ideally. Why is it so damned expensive? We have heard nothing but horror stories about Andrew Hawker so he is one to avoid I guess. At the moment Alan Law looks the best value. Can anyone give some advice on who and who not to use please?! Much love

Ruthie

    Hi Ruth!,

Decent, consistent togs are hard to find. I'm not local to Cornwall so don't know anyone (sorry) but loads on here will do.

Assuming you want anyone decent and assuming they are £1000 then they would have to shoot 50 weddings a year to earn an average wage after insurances, equipment costs, advertising and all associated things like that.

Plus most togs don't do anywhere near that much and from start to finish one all day wedding can take 6 or 7 working days to do.

One pro camera can cost £5000 but an artistic eye is priceless (and chargeable).

Out of the names above Alan Law looks the most personable. The first two whilst excellent appear quite staged in their photos....so consider what you want at the end when the photos are delivered.

The average price I've seen is the £1500 mark. Someone can do 35 weddings a year and earn a decent wage from that.

Did my friend's wedding - the photos looked great, no idea of the cost though.

We are having Helen Morcom, and it is under £1000. She is really nice, and her past work looks good.

I agree with Chris in regards to photography price - a good set of equipment will start at at least £10000 so if someone is doing it for £300 he is simply a chancer.

I'm based in Scotland so don't know anyone in your region who I could recommend but if you still struggling Im happy to do a bit of driving.

This is a valid point, although in reality many photographers do other work when not photographing weddings including portraiture, corporate and other image creative strands....so their income is not solely wedding based.

This is true. It will depend on the persons alternative income streams.

You get some togs who charge £500 because they work 9-5 Mon-Friday elsewhere and want to supplement their income.

In those cases you have to really check them out as to why they aren't doing it full time. Although I do know of one good photographer who does this (but charges a lot more).

I think my photographer covers Cornwall - Ian and Kitty Wright. They're Exeter based so I wouldn't like to guess how much travel could be.

Have you tried looking in the back of Wed magazine? They have a lot of suppliers in there, many of whom are Plymouth based which isn't so far to travel.
