Help with ring re-sizing please!

Larkie08, 9 January, 2012 at 18:29 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi,

My H2B bought me a beautiful engagement ring when we were on holiday in New York. Since getting home and trying on wedding rings i've come to the conclusion that i'm going to need it re-sized as it does move around quite a lot and twists. The only thing i'm worried about is whether i will be able to get it resized from an M to a K 1/2... this is the sort of ring that i've got except mine has a single square diamond in the centre.

Can anyone give me an idea as to whether or not this style of ring can be sized down?? I'm worried that it's going to be the type of ring that they won't resize ?

Many thanks!

Since the diamonds are only on the shoulders, it should be fine. Mine has similar shoulders and has been resized up (they made it too small to start with) with no major problems.

They say you can resize by up to 2 full sizes up or down so long as its not a full eternity ring.

My engagement ring was a family heirloom, and was a good 4 or 5 sizes out, so when that went in to the jewelers they only managed to keep a small part of the ring (just the setting and the diamonds on the shoulders, and the rest of the band was replaced.

The ring is now not a full circle but more of an oval as they could not bend the top of it enough without it losing the setting.

This cost a small fortune to do.

I think you will be fine, the wedding ring i am getting has the diamonds on the band (not the full way round) and the woman said it can be adjusted by a size (ish - 2 pushing it) if i lose weight before the wedding. so i think a size and a half will be ok! best thing to do is to ask at a jewellers but i would imagine you will be ok! Yes 1.5 sizes should be fine. But, if you're able to exchange the ring for the same one in the right size I would choose that option rather than a resize. Only if you can though, if not a resize will be fine on that and the work should be guaranteed.

I can't help but I am really interested in the responses. My OH bought my ring when I was eight months pregnant and had been seriously eating for 50! I've since lost 4 stone and my ring now falls off ☹️

If the ring is the same as this with the exception of the centre stone it will be absolutely fine. As long as the stones are claw set (with these all are) most jewellers and goldsmiths will resizes up to 5 sizes up or down without any noticable thinning of the shank and it will not pose any risk to the stones.

Its only when the stones are tension set that it is not recommended to go more than 1-2 sizes up or down as the risk of the stones popping out becomes increasingly high.

I wouldnt worry about the sizing having any effect on the ring as most people think as most rings that are sold have usually been joined at the base of the shank as they are rarely made from one piece castings.

    Hope this helps! Smiley smile

Thank you for all of your replies so far, it has helped to put my mind at ease. After numerous photos (how hard is it to take a good photo of a ring!!)

I have managed to get a couple that show you what my ring is actually like...
