Hen do....

*PN*, 8 January, 2014 at 13:05 Posted on Planning 0 11

I actually think organising the hen do has been more stressful than organising the wedding! Gah!

Back in August I set up a group saying this is what I fancied doing and how much it was going to cost approx, basically who was up for it? Got really good feedback and everyone seemed really excited. So I arranged everything through this company, thought that would be easier, so people could pay when they wanted, instead of having to pay me. But now it's getting closer loads of people are dropping out saying they can't afford it. I would understand if I had arranged everything this week and expected payment in the next month but it's like 6 months notice! The activity planned needs to have a minimum of 8 people and I'm worried there won't be enough people ☹️

Am I being harsh??

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I don't think you're being harsh, 6 months is plenty of time!!

This is one of the reasons why I'm not having a hen do! I hope people pull their finger out and decide they can attend for you!

Thanks Muppet, glad to know I'm not being harsh or unreasonable.

Tbh I wish I hadn't bothered with a Hen Do at all, I didn't particularly want one in the first place, but I think after hearing about the stag do plans I had a change of heart. Meh.

I know how you feel I've had exactly the same problem! I told everyone what I wanted to do months and months in advance and said I wanted to get deposit down by September, the Hen Do isn't til June so plently of time to pay it off and people just drop out with no reason!! The is only 5 of us now but we will still enjoy ourselves, quality over quantity!! xx

I don't think you're being harsh either, but money is such a difficult and divisive subject.

I would speak to the individual friends involved. Sometimes giving people the option of doing things when they want backfires because it's more important to you that they do it than to them and things are easily forgotten or lower down their list of priorities.

Is it the sort of activity that gets cheaper the more people are involved? If so, make it clear to them that them backing out could have financial repercussions for you. Could you maybe invite other people if they do drop out?

It's so difficult isn't it, I don't envy you at all. Luckily my lovely MOH has organised my whole hen, and in fairness no one has dropped out - the only one who might is my poor friend who broke her ankle on New Years Eve (my hen is in 3 weeks' time) but she's already paid in full.

I organised my MOH's hen last year when I was her MOH, and I totally agree with you on the stress front - and getting people to pay was the ahrdest bit!

We are doing cocktail making session and the minimum number is 8 people, so if I don't have 8 people then I will have to cancel it. There is no one else that I would particularly want to invite, I don't have a massive group of friends as it is..

Thankfull when I told my MOH that she was going to be MOh she said she'd like to plan the hen do, and quite honestly I'm really glad she did, I dont think I could have dealt with planning the wedding and then having to deal with planning the hen do on top of that!! She's just making a group on facebook and then going from there. As to using those companies Ive specifically asked not to use one of those. Although they seem to take a lot of the hard work out, when you have to pay £140 by the middle of Jan its quite stressful when its only the 5th and your bank account is already in the red!!

I understand it's stressful trying to get money together, but they have been aware of the balance since August and it is due next month. I had been trying to keep the fb page updated so people wouldn't forget but obviously this didn't work. I only used this company because I thought it would be easier for everyone. I feel like a loner lol

Ah dont be too harsh on yourself, I think maybe they have neglected to think about hard it is to plan a wedding without having to plan your own hen do at the same time!! I think maybe a few 'gentle' reminders might be in order!!
