Hen do - how close to the wedding day???

MISSMAYFLOWER, 27 July, 2010 at 16:22 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi everyone

All my bridesmaids are coming over this weekend (its hard to get them all together - this is probably the last time this year!) and we thought we might think of dates for my hen do. The problem is, I've no idea how close to the wedding day these normally are! Is the hen do usually within a couple of weeks of the wedding or earlier than that?

Just wondered how soon before the wedding day you are all thinking of having / had your hen do and for any OM's or soon to be OM's whether this seemed too close or too far away from the day!

I know its a bit of a silly post but I want to try and make everything as straight forwards as poss for people!

thank you

    Hi,

I'm having my hen party in 2 weeks, so it'll be 10 weeks before the wedding. My OH is having his stag do in Sept and it'll 6 weeks before the big day. There isn't a right or wrong time to have your hen/stag party, however I wouldn't want it too close to the wedding (I put a stop to any suggestions about OH having his at any point in Oct) x

I had mine fairly far away from the wedding because my Dad turned 60 2 weeks ago (ie 4 weeks before the wedding). We had a few things booked in to celebrate that so I didn't want to miss out on his birthday / do anything after as I knew things would get really busy!

In the end, the weekend I chose was in April and I had a seperate night out for family 5 weeks before. OH's stag do was the same weekend as my hen night.

I had mine 7 weeks before, OH had his 6 weeks before. We gave our friends a few dates and that's how we did it. Also, cos we're getting married over the typical holiday period, I thought 7/8 weeks before was best to give people time to go on holiday inbetween hen and wedding. Oh, and we were going to the seaside so wanted to do it before kids broke up cos of cost, and cos of kids! I also am super aware of how much hen and wedding affect our friends cost wise, so didn't think it was fair to have the 2 close together, as it's two nights / weekends away for a lot of people out of one pay check if they were in the same month - also something to bear in mind for those with kids having to maybe leave them twice in the same month.

Personally I wouldn't have wanted it much closer than I had it - a week at most as we have had loads to sort in the last couple of weeks, but if you're super organised you might want it closer to the wedding...just give OH time for his eyebrows to grow back of course, hehe! ?

I'm not sure when to have mine either.

We're getting married on 12 March 2011. I think asking people to travel the week before is a bit much, the week before that my mum and sister are away, a month before is Valentine's Day, my sister (and CBM) is working in France for the whole of January, then it's Christmas! Argh! I think that leaves either the 19th of February, which is still super close to Valentine's Day, or having it in November which is too far away I think. Sorry for the rant ?

OH's sister had hers 4 weeks before her wedding, my friend had hers in March and got married in May. I don't think there's a right or a wrong really.

Mine is going to be 6 weeks before and Mr CB's will be either 7 or 5 weeks before.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful, I'm thinking 8-10 weeks before to try and fit it around a bank holiday - although I'm not sure if that will make it easier or harder for people!

I might just leave it to the bridesmaids to sort - I'll give them a rough idea of dates and they can do the rest!

I thought I had it bad!!! I know we're going to The Birdcage on the Saturday night and I can buy a pretty dress for that. However I don't know what is planned for the Friday and they've told me they will dress me for that ?

Mine has been being organised since about March too, I was thinking someone would have slipped up by now too but no-one has. One of the girls has been close on many an occasion but has stopped herself!! x
