Hertfordshire Venues

vixenvix, 24 August, 2009 at 09:40 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hey everyone (I have another question!)

Is anyone getting married in Hertfordshire? I've been looking at locations around the area and I quite like Tewin Bury Farm. It looks quite nice but the PDF brochure they sent by email has no listings of possible costs. I much prefer Great Fosters in Surrey but H2B thinks we should look around Hertfordshire (our local area) before we look at other counites.

So does anyone know anywhere in the Herts area that has a venue that looks anything like https://alexanderhotels.co.uk/great-fosters/?

Thanks to everyone who replies!

    Hi

I got a brochure by post from Tewin Bury and though it looks lovely I felt it was a bit too expensive for me, what is your budget? not much help on anything else im afraid!

We're not certain on the budget. My mum is offering to pay for it all but she hasn't come out with a definate amount that we can use on just the location. I think we could probably use about £15,000 on the location at a puch but that would include the cost per person for the food as well.

How much did the brochure say Tewin Bury was FutureMrsCover?

Well in that case you can probably afford it! cant remember the exact amount and i chucked it out! might have been about 8k or something inc food, not sure. if you request a brochure by post they should include some prices, if not give them a call and just ask.

Thanks! I've sent off for a brochure so I'll hopefully get that soon.

If I remember rightly when i looked at tewin bury earlier this year it was £80 per person for food and ceremony there might be a bit more for next years prices. if you have £15000 for just the venue and food you should be able to afford it depedning on how many guests yu have. there are loads of places, there was a thread the othe day with loads listed of various prices.

theres priory barn, ponsbourne park (a friend at work got married here and the pics were lovely), hanbury manor hotel, fanhams hall hotel, bluntswood hall there are lots in herts depending on what type of venue you are looking for, number of people you might invite and your budget. some of the ones I have listed may be quite expensive, but depending on your numbers you could afford them with your budget.

I looked at Tewinbury. My only problem with it was that there were too many different rooms and areas so in the evening your guests could potentially be split into 4 rooms (the main hall, the buffet room, the bar room and the outside patio).

I can highly recommend Ponsbourne where my best friend got married and Fanhams Hall. I've been to a wedding at Hanbury Manor which was lovely but again, it became a bit segregated. Bluntswood Hall and Hitchin Priory are nice. There's so many out there! Have you looked at the Hitched venue list? x

VickyC makes some great suggestions. IMO you will need to go a long way to better Fanhams Hall for grounds. The main building is excellent too. Hanbury Manor has two main venues, there is the main house(although there are subsections in here where the ceremony can take place) and there is the Summer House which is self contained within the grounds. Tewinbury has several options, although be aware that there may be several weddings at the same time. The Old Priory Barn in Little Wymondley is a fantastic barn with a great staff/management base. You need to decide if you want exclusivity at your venue and whether you mind the general public around you too, as some venues are in public areas(Ware Priory for example)

It is worth considering that Herts registrars have an agreement to allow the photographer at the front to capture the vows. This is not the case of many other counties. In some instancies, photography is limited to a shot from the rear of the venue.

Yes I had a look through the Hitched venues for Hertfordshire, there were some I hadn't seen before but I really liked the look of Tewinbury. I guess it would be classed as looking a little like a barn, so I'm trying to find venues that look like that.

The cost doesn't sound too bad for it considering our rough budget, but I suppose the only way to tell if it would be right for us to actually go and look at it.

I'll have a look through all the topics and see if I can find the thread regarding Hertfordshire venues. Thanks everyone ?

Tewinbury has three main areas plus a restaurant for weddings. The Stable caters for around 80 and the main barn can do around twice this number.

Photographically, Tewinbury is more limited than some other similar venues, specifically when they laid a new road around the paddock which destroyed some options, and the fact that some areas will be off limits due to that area being set aside for another wedding.

They are though, extremely efficient at what they do with the catering and arrangements for your day.

Have you also looked at Knebworth Barns? Nice barn with access to the main grounds for the photography.

Another possible option may be a non weekend wedding where some expensive venues really drop their prices...

Thanks for the information Peter. We're getting married on a specific date which will be a Sunday in 2012 and we really don't want to change the date set. I want our wedding day to look amazing (obviously), but I want the photo's to reflect that, so if Tewinbury is limited in areas photographically then I would be more inclined to look somewhere else.

Do you know anything about Great Fosters, Peter? Or anyone?

As a photographer, all of my comments on this forum are based on my experiences as such. Naturally if I have experiences of other wedding elements and suppliers I will comment on that too. I really want to stress that Tewinbury is a good wedding venue, although IMO photographically only, it is a bit limiting, specifically if the couple want shots showing off a venues grounds. Naturally if this isn't of any importance, then there is nothing wrong with Tewinbury. I have a very good relationship with the management team there and have seen the venue build from a place where you had to get caterers in, to the goliath that it has now become. That has been achieved through having had happy clients.

Venues that I really like in Herts are Down Hall, The Manor of Groves, Fanhams Hall, Knebworth Barns, Quendon, Hanbury Manor(Summer House), St Michaels Mount, Pendley Manor, Brocket Hall and the Inn on the Lake at Brocket Hall, Hatfield House, West Lodge(I had my reception here many many years ago), Sopwell House(I was nearly "banned" from this venue....I photographed 3 of the first 12 weddings they ever did here and it rained each time, hence the management team jokingly threatening to blacklist me).........additionally, The Coltsfoot Country Retreat, Theobalds Park, Bush Hall Hotel, Theobalds Park , Letchworth Hall Hotel and Ashridge.

Great Fosters is an excellent venue, although all those listed above are very good too, local, and worth a google to see if any may be exactly what you are after.....

    Happy hunting
