"Heterosexual Friendly"

Bombay Mix, 25 July, 2008 at 17:00 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 35

A description of a B&B in north-west Scotland.

What d'you s'pose this means?

Have booked a different one anyway, but maybe I should have checked that it was too. Wouldn't want to offend anyone...

On first glance I would take it to mean that the establishment was targetted at the gay market, but that they also cater for straight couples. I have occasionally seen 'gay-friendly' in a description of a b&b, so I would assume it was a play on that. Odd though, I mean, who cares?

Given the location, I suspect it means that they don't want gay couples sharing a room.

WTheStripeyOneS. They wouldn't be allowed to say "Gay Unfriendly" after all.

I would call them and ask, and if they said it meant that same sex couples weren't welcome I'd inform them I don't give my business to bigots.

    'tis odd isn't it?!

I wonder if they realise it might put heterosexual couples off booking with them, and if they would care.

Is it the Cromasaig B&B at Kinlochewe, by any chance? I like the fact that they have no "discriminatory" single person supplements but appear to discriminate against gays (if I'm reading it the right way). And they have a "Freedom of speech is our right" logo next to the Martin Luther King quote. Hm, people with decided opinions, I would say. ?

That's one word for it, yes. ? Maybe they shouldn't offer guests a chance to relax their aching muscles in the sauna after a day on the hill if they don't want to encourage a gay clientele..?

It's ok, you're sorted if you're a British dog, a vegan, vegetarian, person with coeliac disease, a walker or a climber... ?

I've seen interviews with these people before - if it's the same people, they don't mind having gay people in single rooms (hence they don't charge supplement for single rooms) they just don't believe in practicising homosexuallity.

I in no way whatsoever agree with their opinion, but it is the traditional stance of the Church and is a lot more open minded than some up that way... Bet they're not happy about any non-married couples actually!

I wouldn't stay with them though in a million years.

That's interesting Zebra, and you're right they're probably considered quite open-minded up there. The dog thing did make me laugh!

I won't stay there either - H & I had visions of being greeted by Uncle Harvey and Auntie Val ("In this house we leave our shoes in the front porch, underneath the barometer." etc.)

If you want. I haven't and probably won't because I thought it'd be much more fun to come on here and ponder about it. ?

I remeber years ago driving in cornwall with my ex in the pissing rain, and stopping in st ives outside a B&B just slightly down the street. we had two mountain bikes on the roof. when the woman opened the door, she looked at the bikes and said "SORRY NO VACANCIES". i said oh right, its just that the sign says vacancies, and my girlfriend and me were camping, got wet, she s miserable....oh! whay didnt you say?! come on in...wtf?

and then, when i asked why she said they were full. "well love, i saw the bikes on the roof, and i thought it was two queers. we dont like queers here"

    Love the room choices...

Single (1 single bed), Twin (2 single beds) or Family (3 single beds)... So, not somewhere to go on honeymoon or if you like actually sharing a bed with your legally married/partnered other half...

My parents did the grand tour of the Highlands and Islands a few years ago and stayed in a variety of B&Bs. The one which sticks in their memory was run by a religious old couple. Hung above the bed in their room was a cross stitch sampler with the quote "Whatever you do, put your whole heart into it as though you were doing it for the Lord", which rather tickled my dad's sense of humour. ?

They obviously don't like any unpleasantness, marital or otherwise! [Auntie Val: "Semen is such a persistent stain."]

Nick I hope you'll share the correspondence with us!

This was all over the news a while back, short version is a guy in Wester Ross refused to book two men into a double. And was struck off the tourist board lists, the local B&Bs came out in his support with listings similar to the one you cite.

This side of the water one of the Unionist MPs was taken to court in a test case after the law was passed bringing discrimination based on sexuality into line with that on race. He had previously been quite vocal on the point that he would not allow same sex couples to share a bed in his B&B.

Ah, that might explain the vitriol on www.visitnormalscotland.com about visitscotland.com delisting people.

    "Hi Nick,

It means precisely what it says. Some establishments state, child friendly,
dog friendly or gay friendly in their advertising, we choose to use the term
heterosexual friendly. This of course does not mean that we exclude any
    of the others.

There is a link to a 'Petition Against Equality Bill Amendments' on there, which I think makes their attitude quite clear.

This petition is "An attempt to stop ammendments [sic] presented by Lords Smith and Ali to the Equality Bill with regard to Goods and Services, in particular with regard to accommodation providers such as Bed and Breakfast and the rights of the owners to deny same sex couples double bedded rooms or indeed access to accommodation which would be against the principles or beliefs of the proprieters. If passed into law those refusing such accommodation will be criminalised."

I'll not be planning on staying there anyway.

If you're a devout catholic and follow your faith and believe that homosexuality is wrong, do you not have the right to uphold that belief? I have to admit I get confused on what areas people should be allowed to follow their faith and when it should be challenged
