Drink a pint of water really fast.

    Slow breathing, slow deep breaths

Hold your breath and swallow 5 times. No more, no less.

According to QI, thinking of bald men helps. Either that or sticking your finger up your bum. (Blame Stephen Fry, not me on that one ?)

I take a really deep breath in, hold it until I feel like I'm about to pass out (but not quite!) then let the air out as slowly as possible. Always works for me!

Eating a banana always gets rid of my son's hicups. Mentioned it to a friend and it worked for her too

Hiccups happen when your vagus nerve (running between brain and abdomen) goes into spasm. Remedies are divided into two mechanism: stimulation of vagus nerve to reset it -or- distraction techniques to make your brain focus on something else.

Vagus nerve stimulation: massage roof of mouth with finger, drink ice-cold water, stick tongue out really far, stick fingers in ears.

Distraction techniques: almost always involve regulated breathing to increase CO2 levels and focus your brain on fixing that. Slow breaths, counting/alphabets (when you naturally slow breathing while concentrating), swallowing while holding breath.

The 'fingers in ears while drinking cold water from far side of glass' combines two methods of vagus nerve stimulation while you likely hold your breath while distracting yourself with a difficult activity. Bingo!

Ha, most people think I'm annoyingly geeky. They love me for pub quizzes, mind.
