Hiring a solo/duo act for entertainment

Milly_Bride, 17 October, 2014 at 15:55 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi everyone,

The planning for our wedding in September 2015 is coming along nicely, but the bit I'm quite stuck on at the moment is evening entertainment! Our venue is a small vineyard in a village location, and we have agreed for the wedding to end at 11pm and to be sensitive to noise. However we want something to liven up the evening (rather than just a DJ) but have a pretty small budget for it - ideally not more than £500. Most bands are more like twice that amount!

Does anyone have any experience/advice on hiring a solo or duo act? I'm worried that they wouldn't be able to keep a crowd entertained as much as a full band would! Also we would prefer some kind of swing/jazz/soul type music which tends to lend itself better to larger bands...

thanks

I have a few friends who work as solo singers professionally, and I've seen countless others when I've gone to visit my mates at work. Trust me, a solo act can entertain the crowd just as much as a band. One of my friends is a Michael Buble tribute and uses backing tracks, which works fine. A few other friends do a mix of showtunes, pop, rock, jazz - a bit of everything really. Again, they work with backing tracks, although one or two of them also play guitar and do some "unplugged" numbers. Prices vary considerably. One of my friends can make a minimum of £450 for one 45 minute set, another one has prices ranging between £250 (two 45 minute sets in a pub on a normal weekend) to £750 (two 45 minute sets and one 15 minute set in the same pub on New Year's Eve).

Swing and jazz can work very well just with backing tracks. Jazz can also work with a live pianist or guitarist, depending upon the style that you want. It's definitely worth looking into.

You'll find something with that budget, I love live music so I really wanted it at the wedding! Our band is £1100 so a little pricey but during the day we have a guitar and violinist duo who are playing during the meal and another livlier set in the evening and they're charging nearly £300 from warble Xx

If you're in the north check out Steven Heath Entertainment. By day he's a drama & performing arts teacher at a school - by night he's a solo artist performing at weddings.

He has recorded all his own backing tracks so you get the same sound that you'd get with a band.

    Hi Milly

The Suits offer a duo option, (2 acoustic guitarist/vocalists) it's very popular for the kind of set up you have described and goes down really well. Depending upon your location we would happily work within your budget.

Please send us an email for a quote and to chat furhter

    Hi Milly,

I hope you're planning is still going well. I play in a guitar and sax duo that play jazz, swing and some pop numbers that might be just what you're looking for. Take a listen to us here.

Please get in touch if you want to discuss further - ****************@*****.***

    Thanks

We had a smallish wedding [50 guests] and were also at a venue where the music had to finish by 11pm.

We had a female solo singer for two 45 minute sets and then the venue DJ for the rest of the evening; it worked great and all our guests were really impressed with the singer ;-)

Don't know where in the country you are but this is the singer we had and I would highly recommend her...

I think she cost us £275 although I can't remember exactly.

Warble is good for a look anyway as they have a wide variety of singers/bands, etc.
