Hitched vibes needed please (been unemployed for 8 months) UPDATED

Michpuss, 27 August, 2009 at 13:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

I've not asked for vibes before on here but as I don't seem to be getting very far, maybe vibes can just swing it for me.

Briefly, I worked for a company for over 20 years, got headhunted at the end of 2007 and then found myself unemployed by the end of 2008. It's been a difficult few months. Our mortgage company has been less than helpful and our savings have now gone.

I've been for several interviews and got through to the final of stage of most of them but still no job. (The last one I got to the 3rd and final stage, from 40 applicants to 3 - and didn't get it).

I've got a final stage interview tomorrow and am one of only two finalists - so even odds this time ?

So, if anyone is available at 11.00am tomorrow any "get the job" vibes sent in my direction would be much appreciated.

Michpuss - I feel your pain by proxy. My H has been out of work for just over 6 months. I daren't say too much for fear of jinxing as he's had too many false dawns and final interviews etc but we may have something positive to say next week.

All the good luck and vibes in the world to you!

Lots of vibes for you and I feel your pain, both from my time unemployed earlier this year and also because H is going through it now and has got down to the final 2 or 3 twice now and not got the job despite very positive feedback. It is so frustrating.

Will keep everything crossed for you.

Mich, I hope it went well. I still think it totally sucks how things worked out with that job, and I really hope you get this one. Clearly you're a good candidate, but probably the others are flashing something during their interviews, or offering cash bribes...

My fingers are crossed for a good result...

    Thanks Stelly and everyone.

BUT it was awful. I was interviewed by the UK Sales Manager and the European Sales Director. The Manager asked me a question and when i tried to make eye contact with the Director as well, he was staring out of window. He then went on to ask me something I had already answered - so completely not interested in me at all.

I haven't heard anything yet but I am assuming it's another rejection.

I've just told H that I would rather get rejected at the initial stages rather than keep getting to the final stage. (maybe cash bribes are the way to go? ?)

Don't lose hope MP, I had an interview like that too. Turns out I got it ( am still waiting on a start date).

He was aggressive or not listening to my answers. I seriously came out of the interview thinking that was it....

I have everything crossed for you, this losing your job and getting interviews in the recession suck. Sending a hug you need and deserve it ?

Michpuss - sorry to hear that. My H can join you on the "yet again" bench too. He thought he was in with a really goo shout and just got another no today as well. At final interview stage.

    Life really sucks right now.

Thanks Alison - I answered your post on the other place - but that seems to have gone down now.

Life does suck. I am so fed up and low and I can imagine how your H feels.

I said to my H that I would rather be knocked out at the 1st round now rather than get to the 2nd or even 3rd round and then be rejected (which is completely illogical I know).

I am really sorry to hear that Michpuss + Alison

Can i ask, have you been applying for roles through recruiters, or on your own?

Recruiters will nearly always ask for feedback when you've not gotten the job/progressed through

So you should always ask for feedback in these cases, so that you can see if/where you are going wrong.

Sometimes it's to do with personality fit at this late stage and sometimes it's experience/performance in the interview.

I think getting some feedback should really help you - and perhaps, if you can face it, do some interview practise with a good friend who will give you truly honest feedback (ie not answering accurately, rambling, fiddling with things etc etc)

I do work as an office manager for a recruiter so that's just my 2p worth.

Anyway fingers crossed something comes along soon for you

    SG

I've been applying via recruiters and direct. I haven't really had useful feedback from either to be honest. I must be doing something right as I'm getting to the final stages most times but then not actually get the job.

One job I went for said that it was between me and one other but that they felt the other person was a better fit. So I think it may be personality but I don't really know what to change.

Sorry Michpuss, back to the bench with me?

On the positive side (and there definately is one) you are getting down to the final interview stage, well done for that! You said you didn't think it had gone particularly well with that one bloke and it looks like it has just come down to a feeling for a person rather than actual ability, so frustrating as there is bog all you can do about it. I used to get so angry about this but in the end I've probably got off lightly by not being in a place I fit at (not that that is easy to think when you're desperate for a job) and try to focus on the next one.

A bar of chocolate and a bit of a cry is my chosen method of taking my mind off things, a good sleep, then more job hunting?

Michpuss, I don't think you are doing anything concretely `wrong` per se. INterviews and `fit` are tricky things.

Perhaps if it is as you suspect, coming down to personality fit you should look at whether you really want to work for the companies you are applying for jobs with, as maybe these companies are not aligned with what you value - which is why there is a lack of personality fit as it were.

Its a bit like dating IMO ie: they like adventure sports and you don't(for example!), so no matter how nicely you dress and talk etc you've not got any common ground to start a relationship on. If that makes sense. That is very basic but I think you see my point.

This is all IMHO but although I understand beggars can't be choosers, perhaps look back at where you applied and see if you really would have wanted to work there, outside of it being A JOB IYSWIM.

On the other hand, the recruiters should be pushing harder for useful honest feedback for you.

If you want to email me to chat about this, I am not sure how much help I'll be, but my email is ************@*******.***

Anyway I really feel for you as I can see how demoralising and frustrating all this must be for you x

So sorry to hear this Michpuss. H is in the same situation and has just missed out on his 3rd in about 3 weeks where it has been down to the last two or three. One in particular he thought had gone really well but they went with someone with a different skillset. Another he didn't get because he was too young!

It is so frustrating. I really hope something comes up for you soon.

What sort of thing are you looking for?

Thanks Stupidgirl - what you say makes sense. Looking back, I would say I probably would have wanted to work for about 2/3 of the companies that I have applied for.

One role had 3 stages of interviews. It reported directly to the US and for the final stage, the US manager flew over to interview the last 3. It turned out that we had worked in the same dept for the same company in a similar role at different times (him in the US, me in the UK but it was a travel technology co which is a fairly niche market) and we chatted about the same people we knew. It went so well that I thought I had it - but didn't. I also knew someone who worked there who had sent an email to the Senior European Director (who had conducted the 2nd interview) saying how good I would be (the director agreed) so I don't see what else I could have done.

The last one, the HR manager lived quite near me and went to school round the corner from where I lived as a child - so I am trying to find common ground to chat about during the interview but that's not always easy.

Redbedhead - It so frustrating. I hope your H finds something soon.

I'm looking for a sales/account management role in airlines, aviation or travel technology.
