Hitched vibes needed - Update

Clairy, 1 October, 2008 at 11:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I have to make a pitch to a seriously important client who will start my new little business venture off on the right foot. I have never done anything like this in this context before (although I have done lots of education presentations to Heads, advisors etc so I keep telling myself it'll be no different).

All vibes appreciated because I am bricking it. Also, any tips from you lovely Hitchers who do this sort of thing all the time would be much appreciated.

Well, just back and it went really well. They've completely changed my proposal, but in a positive way. They're now talking about hiring me for at least 30 weeks rather than 10. I have had to make a few concessions (namely the name of the magazine) but TBH they want to brand it the same as their local youth programme which has a much stronger brand image than mine locally, anyway. I've agreed to do it as a one-off rather than a repeat contract (which makes me stand out from competitors) which has impressed them and there is already talk of doing other magazines and how they might fund the next few if this one is successful. Lots of "we're so excited about this" and "we have never produced something like this on this scale" etc. They've also agreed a PR campaign locally that includes the local press and a poster and billboard campaign which, whilst it isn't directly related to my brand name, I will make sure everyone and his wife knows we are doing it, so it's great PR for us too.

?

I celebrated by buying a sexy pair of patent grey shoe boots and a matching handbag ? Mr Clairy won't be pleased.

I've just started up my own company doing what I do but hiring my own photographers etc. I did my first big pitch last week, it was so scary. I just tried not to waffle and to give brief straight answers to questions, I found out this morn I have their contract for 12 months, so I must have done something right?. I think if your passionate about something it shines through, Good luck, you'll be fab.

Yay ? congratulations Titchbunny, that's great.

It's a parenting magazine for teenagers. I am pitching to the local council - they have agreed in principle, but this is the Head of Corporation and we are going to discuss content and style. So, in many ways, the deal has been done although I am not naive enough to think that I don't have to impress this woman enormously.

The magazine will contain parenting information aimed at teenagers, with self esteem boosting / apsiration raising articles - many are of teen parents who have gone on to be successful (including some Hitchers!)

I will also go and work with the teen parents for 10 weeks teaching them how to write an article, so that they can then represent themselves and see their work published. I hope to expand this by getting them to research, present and record podcasts and short videos about life as a teen parent too. These will then go on the website, which will have forums too. It's an interesting literacy project that should see them achieve a basic skills qualification.

I am certainly passionate about the idea, and it brings together 2 elements of my career so far. I am just well aware that I need one council on board to take the next step, and this is the woman I need to impress.

    Thanks,

But Yay to you, what a fantastic idea, I was a teen parent and now a granny of 2 at 39?, the 2 oldest girls were brought up by their dad from 6 and 4, I was only 17 and 19 and had awful pnd and really didn't get any support. I remember buying mother and baby etc and they really didn't fit who I was iyswim. My daughters became parents at 21 and 20 and I know that they struggled to find books etc that were aimed at young parents.

It is bloody hard being a young mum, I remember the looks, self esteem and self respect is sooooo important, I tell my girls all the time how proud I am of them as I never felt I had any support etc.

I think it's an amazing project, I'd love to see it when your up and running.

Oh wow, that's just what I wanted to hear. Thank you TB ? It sounds like you're doing a great job as a mum and Grandma too.

I'd love to share it with you - in fact, if my pitch is successful, could I interview you as a successful Granny please? ?

I am quite enjoying the granny thing, I think I am fab at buying noisy toys and handing them back when they cry?

Will this be a local thing? I can really see the idea working nationally, there is so little out there aimed at young parents, both my girls are with their partners and I know when my younger daughter went to the parenting classes the teacher made Martin feel really stupid and unwelcome. I really think you could take your project in so many directions, I am excited for you,

Hey you could get Jamie Oliver to do a food bit - that would fit in with his ministry thing. Only joking really, but it would be great.
