Holiday leave entitlement based on grade - HR question.

I've never really thought about this before now but a colleague is moving from a 'research and teaching' post to a 'administrative and professional management' post and asked me whether her annual leave entitlement would change or not. A quick look on my intranet HR pages game me my answer but I did notice this, how is this okay:

Admin and prof staff, grade 1-4 = 25 days plus 8 public holiday day and up to 5 uni closure days

Admin and prof staff, grade 4+ = 30 days plus 8 days public holiday days and up to 5 uni closure days

Is this normal? How is this fair!?

    At our place you get more the longer youve been here. Soonce youve been here 2 years you then get an extra day per year up to a ceiling. Just how it is.

    That's odd. We all get the same holiday which increases after 'time done'.

    Same here. My place gives 22 days for bands A-B, increasing by 2 days every 2 years up to a maximum of 28. And 25 days for band C and above, also increasing to a maximum of 30 days.

    I thought it was fairly standard to have benefits increasing in relation to grade/band?

    At my work (Uni as well):

    Grades A - I: 23day annual leave, 2 additional days after 5 years service, 8 public holidays and 7 University closure days

    Grades J and above: 25days annual leave, 8 public holidays and 7 University working days

    So, I guess after 5 years here, everyone gets the same.

    We get more holidays if we've been here a certain amount of years.

    It's perfectly fair I think. Presumably her salary will increase because it's a more senior role, so this is just another perk of the job. Some jobs give you company cars for example as a perk of a more senior role.

    As long as the employer is giving the minimum allowed by law (which it's exceeding anyway) it's not doing anything wrong.

    In my place leave is dependent on grade and length of service. Managers tend to get more leave as generally it's a more stressful job plus they won't necessarily always get the same level of benefits as employees lower down the pecking order. For example, we have a flexi time scheme but higher up managers aren't eligible for it so they are given extra leave.

    Legally you are only entilted to 20 days (28 inc bank hols), anything over and above that is at your companies discretion including giving more days to senior staff or to longer serving staff.

    My company have all diffirent leave entitlements depending on what contract you are on, length of service and if you buy any holiday extra

    I think that I went up from 27 to 32 days plus bank holidays this year, as I went up to a certain point on the pay scale. Doesn't matter though as I'm not going to be able to take it all ☹️
