Holiday reading ideas

Helenia, 27 June, 2013 at 23:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I'm off for a week in Shetland with H's family on Saturday. I'm planning on lots of relaxation time and not sure if there is TV/internet, so I need some new suggestions for my Kindle so thought I'd pick the collective Otter brains.

Likes: Historical fiction, e.g. Phillippa Gregory, Ken Follett, Alison Weir - however I have read both Hilary Mantel's books and though they may have won the Booker, I didn't warm to them at all, so maybe I need them to be a little trashy! I like crime novels like the Scarpetta series, Wallander, Jo Nesbo etc. Some fantasy - love LotR and GoT, but haven't got on with some others. I do like many classics though I struggle to engage with very wordy writers like Dickens.

Dislikes: Chick lit. 50 Shades. Sci-fi.

Any ideas much appreciated!

Have you read James Frey- A million little pieces? Its based roughly on the authors own journey through drug addiction and rehab (the sequel My friend Leonard is also good).

I've not read books like them before (sounds like I have similar taste in books as you) I quite like the authors writing style (I think some book snobs may find it a bit primitive) anyway you can preview a couple of pages on amazon.

If you like historical fiction have you tried any Barbara Erskine? Lady of Hay is especially good.

Fantasy wise I have loved everything by Trudi Canavan, especially the Age of Five books.

One of my all time favourite books is Human Traces by Sebastian Faulks.

I've just finished 'only the innocent' by Rachel abbott, it's about a man's murder and the family twists involved, don't want to say too much incase you want to read it

That was all a bit weird! Notice how I describe the book as roughly based on the authors own journey. It's by no means an autobiography (nor in my cabbage was it marketed as) of course he made stuff up to make it a more interesting read.

If you like crime have you read any Karin Slaughter? or Karen Rose? I recently read Lone Wolf by Judy Piccoult (?) and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, not normally a style of book I read. I really enjoy Mark Billingham too.

I like Peter James and Gordon Hurley as they are crime thrillers set local to Sussex/Hants.

Also like Phillipa Gregory, Wilbur Smith and Conn Inguldsen (sp). CI's books are set in Roman times so can be pretty racey.
