Holiday reading recommendations?

cherry_bomb, 17 June, 2009 at 15:18 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

Has anyone got any recommendations for good books they've read lately - I went into Waterstones to look for some holiday reading but as I didn't really have anything in mind couldn't make a decision at all.....

I like good 'womens fiction' ie Marian Keyes, but don't like generic chick lit fluff. The best book I've read recently has been American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld - I like something with a plot rather than a meandering novel about nothing in particular.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

I'm currently reading anybody out there by marian keyes, if you've not read it, it's very good. So far it's made me both laugh and cry.

Also a similar writer to marian keyes in Sheila O'flanaghan. I also like her stuff. I've just picked up a new book of hers for my holiday in 10 days time.

I think I'm the only person who doesn't really like Marian Keyes. I like Martina Cole as they are grittier than your normal chick lit, but after a few they all get a bit samey.

    Do you like autiobiography's?

KB3 - I don't read autobiographies that often but I do like them if they're people I'm interested in, can't be doing with Katie Price/Jade etc though. Any recs for good ones?

Don't laugh but my nan really rates Paul O'Grady and keeps telling me I should borrow it, it's making it's way around the family right now.

I've just finished one on a guy who used to smuggle drugs into the UK during the 90s rave scene. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Urban-Smuggler-Andrew-Pritchard/dp/1845963105/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1245254709&sr=1-1

I like drug related / gang mob type bios too.

Camberwell Beauty by Jenny Eclair - sort of chick lit but VERY cynical, slightly on the man-bashing side but very entertaining. Can't wait till I get chance to read her other one, which is called Having a Lovely Time.

I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns at the moment. There seems to be loads of good reviews about this, but I have to say I have never really fancied it. I am enjoying it though. I just finished The Charmer by Mandasue Heller. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have got bored with Martina Cole's but thought The Charmer was absolutely fantastic. I think she is fairly new but I am going to try and get my hands on all her other stuff.

Penny Vincenzi is historical 'chick lit' and brilliant. Recommend the Lytton trilogy of No Angel, Something Dangerous and Into Temptation to start with. Loved them and couldn't put them down.

Apparently, the film of My Sister's Keeper doesn't have the same ending as the book so I'm preparing to be disappointed but will still have to go and see it!
