Holidays in Britain and Ireland

Purple Pixie, 26 January, 2009 at 13:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

I've been inspired by a few posts on here and BT lately. Lovely stories and photos from people who have had holidays without travelling too far.

OH has agreed to stump up the cash for a short break (5 nights ish) for my birthday present but I need to do the planning! (not that I mind, I am a complete Monica!)

So, does anybody have recommendations for holidays? At the minute I'm completely open about what type of holiday to go for - only real thing to consider is that we'll have a 3 year old and don't want full board.

Happy to fly/drive/use the ferry. Don't mind whether it's hotel/cottage/holiday park. Somewhere with a children's club or at least playground or something similar would be good but not a necessity.

Sorry, that's really vague but I'd love to hear all the wonderful places you've been. It's so easy to book a holiday abroad and forget what a beautiful place we live in.

I always recommend the Isle of Wight. I have such happy memories from holidaying there as a child. So much so I often take my step children there for a short break.

There are beautiful beaches, walks & places of interest. I think we've done just about everything there is to do ? The Needles and Blackgang Chine being the kids favourites. Along with the arcades on the beachfront.

KB3 - IOW was a regular for me too as a child. I don't think OH has ever been so that's a definite possibility. I wonder if Black Gang Chine is still open or whether it's all fallen in the sea now?

Thanks ashke, I'll have a look at that.

If you're thinking of Ireland, I'd strongly recommend the North over the South atm. The Republic is soooooo expensive atm with the Euro having taken a battering and the tax increases etc

If you drive, you can cross the border for a day in Dublin or whatever, but NI has stunning scenery and a reasonable amount of things to do for families.

Google the NI tourist board for more info.

Whoo- hoo its still there!!!! I used to love the IOW when I was a kid. It's like stepping back in time. Haven't been in years!

What about somewhere like West Wales - its beautiful there and lots of wonderful clean beaches - Tenby and Saundersfoot are my faves for seaside town-type locations however if you head north on the peninsula you will find more remote beaches. Pembroke has a fab castle for the kids.....

Where are you located and how far are you willing to travel?

Some fantastic ideas, thank you everyone. Now I want more than one holiday though ?

I've never been to Northern Ireland that sounds appealing.

KB3 - just off to have a look at that link ?

Eg of expensive - when we were in Dub before Xmas, it was 14.50 Euro for a beer and vodka & diet coke. Which is about 14 of your english pounds at today's crappy rate. Bag of crisps = about 80p in a shop. 80 farking p.

Crieff hydro near Perth is nice - you can choose self catering or family rooms in the hotel itself - they do free childcare and there are lots of activities - ask roobarb, she's been a few times ?

We've been looking for something similar... there are a few places near Loch Lomond too which are nice ?

www.mrandmrssmith.com has some lovely places you can look at - nice boutique hotels

I love Cornwall for lovely scenery, nice places to stay and lots of nice places to eat too (only trouble is getting there - its an awfully long way, that said I really want to do the sleeper down there)

IoW is lovely - we spend a week there are my BIL's holiday home each summer. Have a look around Seaview which is a really pretty area

If you do decide on N.Ireland we have just booked these for the summer https://limepark.com/

They are in a great spot with plenty of things to do see around them.
