Home hair colouring help needed please

Livi, 24 July, 2009 at 10:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 9

Hi

I coloured my hair last night and not sure if I have created a disaster! I am naturally a mid brown colour and due to the grey starting to appear (grr) I colour it with a similar colour. However I have been bored of it for a while but can't afford a salon colour so decided to lighten it myself. I used Garnier Belle Colour and wanted to get a light brown colour so it said i needed to use a pre lightner first and then the colour. 2 hours later last night and I was finished!

The colour is much lighter than I had planned and possibly has a hint of 'copper' (i.e. ginger) in it!! What can i do about this? Will i totally f*ck it up if i put a slightly darker shade on top? will i just get more 'copper'??

On the plus side i asked my 2 year old this morning what colour my hair was expecting a response of yellow (blonde) or orange (ginger) aand she said brown so that makes me feel a bit better.

Please help me before I make it worse!

Thanks

You need to post a pic you do know that don't you ?

I seem to remember La Psycho saying that Head & Shoulders will strip unwanted home dye from hair.

I'd stick a darker shade on top...

Steer clear of anything that says dark brown or darkest brown though as I coloured by hair with the nice and easy one last week and my hair is now completely jet black! Having spent a very long time growing the black out about 3 years ago I am a bit grumpy about this (although it reminds me of my goth days!)

I colour my hair myself regularly and have had a couple of mishaps but have found the colour settles after 2/3 washes so I wouldn't try and repair it with another colour just yet.

In relation to the comment about Head and Shoulders, my hairdresser once told me that it contains that many chemicals that it's the equivalent of pouring oven cleaner on your hair so I would steer away from that big time.

    Ex hairdresser here

Red/ warm tones are the first to catch and first to lose so yes wash a few times before doing anything else as the red will tone down. possibly re-colour but use an ash colour rather than warm/ reds.

When I lightened my hair and wanted to go back to brown I had to have it dyed red first, leave it a week, then dyed brown over the top. If you dye brown straight on top of lightened hair it will go green.

I'd start by giving is several very thorough shampoos and see where you go from there and also recommend talking to a hairdresser as they will be able to advise best.

I wouldn't muck around trying to sort it out yourself. Go and see a hairdresser to minimise damage to your hair.

I didn't say H&S was like oven cleaner, I said my hairdresser said it contains that many chemicals it's like the equivalent of pouting oven cleaner on your hair
