Home improvement WWYD? Boring sorry!

*Clairejk, 1 May, 2011 at 20:57 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

We've just moved and everything needs doing so it's a) daunting and b) difficult to decide an order.

Most important are 1. garden to make it safe for the boys and 2. kitchen because it's much too small for the 5 of us. Garden is obviously most important being summer and unsafe but (and here is my problem) Ikea are doing an offer on appliances 3 for 2 (saving £250) and 20% off installation saving I don't know how much.... The offer ends 8th May and they will honour the quote for 30 days but we need to knock down 2 walls before the kitchen can be fitted and we're still waiting on quotes from builders to do it. H is doing the garden but can't get on with that in the meantime because he will be doing prep for the kitchen work (clearing garage to make space for old kitchen, taking out old kitchen, stripping walls in old kitchen.......)

Part of me says miss out on offer and do garden.
Part of me says we're not rich enough to miss out on offer there must be a way....

WWYD?

I would do house before garden, but then I don't have children.

If it will save you a significant amount of money then can you afford to say no?

I'd do the garden if it needs to be made safe, as it will make your life easier all summer if they've got safe outside space, otherwise you will be forever trying to monitor it and sort problems. There will be other kitchen offers at the end of the summer, like the August Bank holiday.

How desperate is the kitchen? Could you make do with it until another offer comes along?

When you say the garden is unsafe what exactly do you mean?

If your order is money dependant and the garden is going to cost to be made safe, then I'd do that first, then the kids can play out more while the kitchen is being done.

We had a new kitchen last year and from experience, these companies are always doing offers, and quite often can be haggled on price. We got ours from B&Q and managed to save nearly £1000 using their offer at the time, plus haggling for a better price.

I can see some light at the end of the tunnel after our big house restoration, its taken 2 years to get like this! Learning from our mistake i would advise to concentrate on one area at once, our garden was ok to start with (only thing that was!) i'd suggect doing the downstair area first (this is where you spend most of the time and what "visitors" will see) then go upstairs, then last of all the gardens, but if its unsafe then i'd probably try and patch up the garden for now.

BTW when we knocked two walls down the planning regs, took a few weeks to fully sort out (we had 3 visits in the end) this may delay things further....

It's a tough one. I think I'd be inclined to do the garden first. That way, it's done and the kids have it to play in for the summer. It sounds like you've got a bit of work to do in the kitchen before you can have anything fitted and if the garden's done, you can concentrate on the kitchen. One job at a time.

Plus, I'm sure Ikea, and others, will have other offers on. I don't think they can afford not to at the moment.

Could you get a 0% interest credit card for 12months, buy the kitchen on that and pay it off over the next year, leving you available funds now/soon to do the garden?
